DEVOTIONAL PROSE

15th cent. Vellum. 9 × 6¼, folios fairly uniform in size. Ff. 41, paginated in pencil, 1 (earlier 115)-82 ([196]). The earlier pencilled pagination, given here in brackets, shows that this MS. and 3 B 22 were at one time part of the same MS. The folios have been separated from their conjugates and mounted on a fresh vellum inner margin, all traces of the former composition of gatherings being thus destroyed. Scribe: Tadcc Ua Rigbard[ái]n (see p. 51, col. a m.). The MS. has been carefully mended with vellum. Crude mends with red thread occur, pp. 17, 23. Pp. 1, 12, 13 are discoloured, pp. 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 81, 82 are damaged and discoloured. Holes have appeared in p. 29, perhaps due to acid (see p. 29, infra). The handwriting is in double column, ruling partly by dry point, but generally in brown, with marginal prickings. Inferior pigments, red, yellow ochre, and green, have been applied in a haphazard manner. Chasms occur in the MS.after pp. 6, 28, 30, 32, 58. Bd. in half-leather, gilt-lettered. “Miscellanea Hibernica Ms. Royal Irish Academy.” The MS. belonged to “Torralach Ó Brin” in the 18th century (see infra)

The following marginalia occur:-

p.

1 (115) Homily on the Eight Arrows of Sin. Beg. Diuerte a malo ⁊ a fac bonum inquire pacem ⁊ sequere eam .i. Soi, a duine, o ulc, ⁊ dena maith. There is a lactuna after p. 6 (120). Text resumes p. 7 (121), immalle re Hihesu is a comairli rogabsat. This may, however, be the conclusion of a different homily.

7 i. Homily on Almsgiving. Beg. Cum ergo facieis elimysinam noli tuba canere ante te .i. Ind tan didu dogné almsain nachus commaeid amal dogniatt na breccaire. Ends p. 12 (126), col. b.

13 (127). Treatise on the penitential commutations (“Do na harraibh ind so”). Beg. Arra tessairgne anma a iffurn .i. Coic pater ar tri xxtib ar trib cetaibh. Pr. Meyer, Rev. Celt. 15, p. 458. Cf. Ériu v, p. 45.

16 (130) i. “De Luxoria.” Beg. Luxoria tra hissed ainm inna dualcha tanaisi marbas anmain duini. Acc. To Gwynn and Purton, Proc. R.I.A. 29 C, p. 117, two documents are here combined, viz., the homily pr. Meyer, ZCP 3, p. 25, from Rawl. B. 512, and extracts from an Old Irish penitential based on Theodore and Cummian. Ends (p. 28, col. a) with the section on “Vana Gloria.” Ed. E. J. Gwynn, Ériu vii, 138, from this MS.

28 , col. b, blank save for a later insertion in a poor hand recording the birth of Máire, daughter of Torralach, and Randhal, his son, in 1727 and 1729. His daughters Ona (?) and Eilior were born in 1733 and 1735 respectively (ibid.). A lacuna occurs after p. 28.

29 (143). Fragment of a Homily on the Passion. Acephalous. Beg. here: ni corab meinic bís a fis aici cred do ní sé fein na nech ele. Ends (p. 29, col. b) with the words, gab co duthrachtach an urnaigti so: Domine Ihesu Christi, cor meam ⁊ rl.

29 , col. b i. Bo beres buar o [rigai]b, ca. 6 11. In a later hand. Very defective, the leaf at this point having rotted. Gwynn and Purton, loc. cit., read the word “rigaib” in the first line; there is now a hole in the vellum here. It would seem as if acid (perhaps that used in preparation of the ink) had been spilt on this leaf at the time of writing the MS.; the damaged section was left blank by the original scribe.

30 . Irish version of Pseudo-Augustine, SPECULUM PECCATORIS. Beg. Hicc incipit Speculum Pectoris .i. Is annso tindscainter Speclair in Pecthaig. There is a lacuna in the text after the words mona gradaigem cach ní teccascces Dia (p. 30, col. b i.- 490, p. 60, 1. 14) owing to a chasm in the MS. Text resumes (p. 31), annsa leis na lebair sægalta ana (no suprascript) an cod rorindi Plato (= 490, p. 68). The text has been noticed 107, 157, 270, 145, 384, 171, 7, 500, 219, supra.

33 . Rules, etc., of the Monastery of Tallaght. Beg. Athlaoch boí hi comaidecht. Pr. Gwynn and Purton, The Monastery of Tallaght, Proc. R.I.A., 29 C, p. 115 ff. The text stands here on pp. 33-47, col. a m., 51-52. the editors, loc. cit., p. 120, draw attention to certain peculiarities of the hand in which this and the following item are written, viz., an unusual form of d, closely resembling a; an unusual form of m, used mainly on p. 33, but occurring two and three times in later pages; and a contraction, consisting of t with a wavy stroke over it, which stands sometimes for tir (ter), sometimes for irt (ert?). They are, however, of the opinion that this is written by the same scribe as the rest of the volume. The peculiarities are probably copied by him from an archetype which he had before him.

47 , col. a m. ABBGITIR CRÁBAID. Beg. Incipiunt uerba Colmain fili Beognae uiri Dei .i. Abbigitir Crábaid. The scribe breaks off in the middle of a column in order to insert this text, which thus interrupts the sequence of the foregoing document on the Monastery of Tallaght. Ends, p.51, col. a m., with the colophon: “Finit. Is fó cech ní sluindess ind lebarsa día tuicmis hé. ⁊ a comaldad. Tadcc Ua Rigbardn qui scribsit ⁊ ni hanmfis tuc ind a. b. c. d. eidir na riaglaib acht degla a feccbalae.”

51 , col. m. Rules etc., of the Monastery of Tallaght. Continued from p. 47, col. a m. This section of text begins: is hed dano dohucc Colccu ho Eogun (= ed. Gwynn and Purton, § 81). Text ends finally p. 52, col. b i.

53 (167). Homily on poverty. Beg. Labrum don bochtainecht or ader Bernard curab conaich an bochtainecht. Ends p. 57, col. a i. Qui uiuit ag radnad [= et regnai] deus per omnia secula seculorem (MS. scel-a scel-um). Amen. Finit.

57 (171), col. a i. Homily on Mercy. Beg. Labrum anos don trocaire. Text ends abruptly p. 58 i., owing to the loss of a leaf of leaves of the MS. here. The last words are ataim acad lenmain oir ní tarc.

59 . Homily on Sin. Beg. imperfectly owing to the loss of some leaves here: oir is daidbir an sanntugad. Ends p. 65, col. a i. : Mased, a duine, dena mar ader an salm .i. indto on olc ⁊ dena an maith ⁊ iarr sith ⁊ lean Dia qui uiuit ad ragnad [= et regnat] Deus per omnia secula seculorum. Amen. This homily may possibly be a later section of the foregoing (see loc. cit., p. 118).

65 , col. b. Homily on the Ten Commandments. Beg. Legthar andsa .ix. Caibidil .xx. Do lebur Matha co tainic duine ócc do insaidhi an Tigherna nemda. Pr. Atkinson, Passions and Homilies, p. 245. Ends (p. 80) ⁊ cach ní da tucais toil egoir sa doman so let .u. cétfadaib corparda (= ed. 1. 7821).

80 , col. a. Homily beginning with the story (from the Book of Maccabees) of the priest Mathias and his resistance to idolatry. The last page (p. 82) is partly illegible, owing to having served for some time as the outer cover of the MS. This homily has something in common with that printed by Atkinson, Passions and Homilies, p. 222 ff. Beg. Selus domus tue cometit me .i. romgab étt mo tegdais.
