Summary description (by Pádraig Ó Macháin)

15th cent. Vellum. 35-36 × 24.5-25 cm. Ff. 198, with different foliations; that followed below reflects the two foliations shown on the 1950 facsimile: 41-243 (1-198). Missing ff. 1-40, 45-6, 234, 240-241, at least one folio between ff. 120 and 121, and an unknown number of folios at the end.

Scribes: 1 Main scribe, unsigned, who wrote most of the manuscript with the exception of the areas noted for the following scribes. 2 Aonghus Ó Callanáin ff. 132-134, 194-201, who wrote for 'Mhág Carthaig .i. Finghean mac Diarmada' (f. 134rb). 3 The hand of the poem on f. 158. 4 A sequence of possibly four relief scribes employed by the main scribe as follows: (a) 41rb2-13, 53ra1-17, 56ra1-9, 61vb1-16; (b) 87va1-31; (c) 125rb21-37; (d) 184ra15-32.

Previously described in detail by Whitley Stokes, Lives of Saints from the Book of Lismore (Oxford 1890); and by R.A.S. Macalister in The Book of Mac Carthaigh Riabhach otherwise the Book of Lismore (Dublin 1950). A study of the Book, concentrating particularly on the different foliations, was published by Brian Ó Cuív, 'Observations on the Book of Lismore', Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy 83 C (1983) 269-92. Brian Ó Cuív also published the poem and legal commentary from f. 158 of the Book that sheds some light on the manuscript's patron, Fínghean Mac Carthaigh: Celtica 15 (1983) 96-110.

Many of the primary texts in the Book were edited and published by Stokes, O'Grady (Silva Gadelica) and others, and publication has continued to the present day, notably in the case of 'An Teanga Bhithnua' (ff. 88-94) recently edited in John Carey, In Tenga Bithnua: the Ever-New Tongue (Turnhout, Brepols 2009).
