Medical.

16th and 18th cent. Paper. 10½ × 6¾. ff. x + 289 (double columns) [foliation skips number 258]. The original pagination has in many parts been cut away in binding, but the penultimate leaf is numbered 598-9, so that the full number of leaves should be 300. Bd. in brown leather, with gilt letters "TN" on both covers. Scribe: Risderd mac Muircertaigh Ó Conchobhair. Certain pages, especially f. 143 v., 157 r. and 157 v. are in a smaller hand, perhaps by another scribe, but more probably all by O'Conor, excepting where leaves which were lost have been replaced by copying from another ms. by (1) Tadhg Ó Neachtain, whose initials "T.N." are on the covers, and (2) another scribe, unnamed ("B"). Ff. 1 to 10 v., l. 14, and f. 138 were supplied by O'Naghten in 1729 (see f. 1v.); ff. 10v. (part), 11, 12, 19, 20, 45, 46, 51, 52 by "B." The latter used as his model 443 (compare f. 52 r. 15 with f. 76a of 443). Part of f. 172 is cut away, and many leaves have suffered by trimming of margins. All the original leaves are more or less stained by damp, and in places obliterated. O'Conor's work was done in various places; see his notes printed below. O'Naghten's at Cartun Fiachrach in Co. Roscommon (see f. 1 v.).

On inside cover a note: "£5 13. 9. Purchased from Mr Robt. T. Hearn, 5 T.C.D. for £4 4. by the Treasurer, Rev. M. H. Close."

Contents: versions of Lilium Medicinae, Decem Ingenia and Prognostica of Bernard of Gordon.

Note

* My very best thanks are due to Dr. Percy Kirkpatrick for lending me the original Latin works from which many of these medical manuscripts (439-474) were translated; also for obtaining for me at considerable trouble to himself the loan of several original Latin texts.

I wish also to express my indebtedness to Séamus ó Casaide who helped me by looking up the items in Auction Catalogues and copying out the particulars in the case of practically every one of the manuscripts.— W.W.
