Adv. LS 73.1.22

(Gaelic MS.CXVII). MEDICAL.

Mackinnon, p.273; Mackechnie, p.275.

Paper. 331 ff. Folio, 29 × 20 cms. “Pot” watermark. Written under MacDougall’s patronage in Lorne and Ossory, 1596-1600, by Donnchadh Ó Conchubhair (Duncan O’Conacher, 1571-1647) at the behest of Ollamh Osraige, Donnchadh Óg Ó Conchubhair, and with the help of Cathal mac Cuinn Uí Dhuinnshléibhe (the scribe of RIA 23 N 16), Giolla Pádraig mac Donnchaidh Óig Uí Chonchubhair, Niall Mac Iomhair, and others. When writing in Ireland Donnchadh uses the distinguishing epithet Albannach. His pedigree, Donnchadh mac Eoin mhic Domhnaill mhic Donnchaidh, is given by Angus Beaton at p. 126 of Adv.MS.72.2.10, a manuscript compiled with his active assistance. He died at Dunstaffnage, and the deaths of successive MacDougalls are recorded in the manuscript as well as his own (f. 257v). It passed through the hands of Eoin Ó Conchubhair and at least one other scribe (f. 257v) before entering the possession of the MacLachlans of Kilbride.

The manuscript is described by Donald Mackintosh, in his catalogue of the material remaining in Major MacLachlan’s possession after 1801, as “A thick folio paper MS. same character, medical, and written by Duncan Conacher at Dunollie, Argyleshire, 1511”. (Poems of Ossian in the original Gaelic, vol.3, p.571). The date 1511 is taken from a colophon at f. 224v, on which a chemical reagent has been used – presumably by Mackintosh himself, as subsequent cataloguers did not reproduce any part of it. The manuscript does not figure in any HSS inventory, yet all that remained of it in the Kilbride family’s possession in 1851 was sixteen leaves (Cf. Adv.MS.73.2.10, f. 200v). The rest was eventually found by Mackinnon at the bottom of box 2 of HSS papers, which had been transferred to the Advocates’ Library in 1850. No Kilbride manuscripts are likely to have been given to the HSS between 1801 and 1850. The explanation must therefore be somewhat as follows. There is evident confusion between Adv.MS.73.1.22 and Adv.MS.72.1.33; the paper section of the latter is partly written by Donnchadh Ó Conchubhair, and a leaf of it was present in Adv.MS.73.1.22 until replaced in 1974. Moreover, when drafting his Kilbride catalogue, Mackintosh placed his description of Adv.MS.73.1.22 first among the manuscripts retained by Major MacLachlan, immediately following his account of Adv.MS.72.1.32-6. (Adv.MS.73.2.12, f. 75v). So it seems possible that when Adv.MS.72.1.32-6 were brought to Edinburgh in 1801, Major MacLachlan inadvertently included the bulk of Adv.MS.73.1.22.

The sixteen separated leaves became Adv.MS.72.1.18 (q.v.). Of these, six were moved to Adv.MS.73.1.22 by Mackechnie and are now ff. 33-8. These bear Hugh Kerr’s initials.

Condition is poor, edges being badly perished at front and rear with resulting textual losses. Until 1977, when it was laminated, most of the manuscript was still held together by thread and four bindings thongs. No original cover is recorded. A pagination was added in places, very inaccurately, by the scribe.

The folio numbers given by Mackechnie are incorrect; no foliation was added to the manuscript until 1978.

In addition to a few marginalia, many notes of considerable interest were inserted to fill out lines in the text. These are given below. A hand resembling that of Niall Mac Iomhair annotates the text at ff. 4r, 62v, 67rv, 70r, 79v, 81r, 83r, 84v, 123r, and 187r. Mac Iomhair may have been of the mid-Argyll MacIvers; his hand is identified by an anonymous scribe who writes “Comortus riot a neill Mhic Iomhair” at f. 265r and the pen-tests “Sinn sin a cheoil binn chaoin”, “an fo an peand so an ainm Dia so 7 Muire na gras”, etc., at ff. 258r and 310r. Words of the text are crudely imitated at ff. 62r, 259r.
