TWO IRISH LITERARY MANUSCRIPTS IN THE MID-WEST

BY EDGAR M. SLOTKIN (University of Cincinnati)

19th cent. Paper with watermark: an Irish harp surrounded by an octagon with motto 'Best Irish Manufacture.' 17.8 × 11.8 cm. 362 pp. numbered + 36 unnumbered. Scribe: Tomás Ó hÍceadha through p. 363, afterwards, employing an inferior and rather acid ink, the owner An tAthair Simeon Breathnach or Simon Walsh. Ó hÍceadha was a native of Ballygray, Co. Tipperary and, significantly, lived at Carrickbeg for a while; also at other places in Waterford. He was a prolific scribe.

Father Breathnach dated his colophon October 25, 1819. He was at various times in County Clare and London, but he is associated in one source with Kilmacow, Co. Kilkenny. He is mentioned in British Museum Add MS 27946, compiled in 1825 by Eugene Kavanagh, as one of a group of Munster poets and scholars.1 'Revd. Simon Walsh, R.C.C.' is mentioned along with 'James Scurry of Knockhouse, County Kilkenny' as 'the prime of their time of my acquaintance among the gentlemen [interested in the Irish language] and were closely intimate'.2 James Scurry was an agent for James Hardiman and assisted in collecting materials for Irish Minstrelsy.3 One of these manuscripts is Royal Irish Academy MS 23 E 1, a paper manuscript by Michael Kinsella of Knockhouse which apparently Scurry sent to Hardiman.4 Bound in this manuscript is correspondence between Breathnach and Scurry and Breathnach and Hardiman. Writing to Scurry in care of Hardiman from London, Breathnach sends poems by William Dall and others and comments. 'I have made no remarks on the above songs. I leave this to Mr. Hardiman and your better judgment. In "Grainne Mhaol" there is an unclear allusion which I hope will be omitted in the translation he gave to you as I have it in my black book. . . .'5 In a letter dated June 6, 1828 the black book is mentioned again. Breathnach is now in Dysert O'Dea and writing Hardiman directly. It is a newsy letter which eventually runs:

But now that . . . your hurry of business is over, perhaps you may spare or waste two or three minutes of your time on one who esteems and loves you and who never will forget your kindnesses. If you can spare a few minutes to answer this, perhaps you could let me know when you can send me the 'leabhar dubh,' for I feel very lonely without it.... I was very sorry to hear . . . that your old scribe Conall is dead . . .; if you should want another to help write out the 'Irish minstrelsy' - I don't know any man more capable of succeeding James Scurry [now dead] than old Thomas Hickey whose name you heard me mention so often . . . He is by far the best Irish scholar I ever met, except poor Scurry. He read and wrote more Irish than . . . Scurry . . . N.B. Thomas Hickey was the collector and writer of the 'Leabhar dubh'.

Dunnington MS 2 is bound in black leather with 'Rev. S. Walsh' stamped in gold leaf at the bottom of the spine. In Royal Irish Academy MS 23 D 42, someone, probably the scribe Patrick O'Mahony, has copied out a Table of Contents of Poems contained in the Rev. Simon Walsh's Black Book, 1824.'6 The list of contents corresponds with the contents of Dunnington MS 2 in every particular but two: the first title given is 'Parliament na mban le Domhnall Ó Colmain cct' but this piece is not in the MS which contains verse almost exclusively; the order of poems listed by O'Mahony is quite different. For that matter, Ó hÍceadha's Clar on pp. 316-3 unaccountably starts with p. 125 so that O'Mahony's list is more complete. I would guess that sometime after O'Mahony saw the MS the book was rebound, 'Párliament na mBan' removed from it and the pages realigned, perhaps to accommodate Father Walsh's additions at the end. I think Dunnington MS 2 must be the Black Book of Walsh or Leabhar Dubh Breathnaigh although some doubt will obviously remain.
