Leabhar Chlainne Suibhne

16th cent. Vellum. 14¼ × 8½ (ff. 79-81 : ca. 12 × 8). Ff. 80, numbered 1-6, 8-23, 26-81, foll. by two unnumbered folios from another ms. (recent pencilled pagination is given below after the ms. foliation). The gaps in foliation represent chasms in the ms. Fo. 51 should stand before fo. 50. The book consists of three distinct portions :—(a) ff. 1-65 v°, written by Cithruad (Cirdicuiss) Mag Findgaill, of Tory Island, in the years 1513-14 for Máire, daughter of Eoghan Ó Máille, wife of Mac Suibhne Fanad. (b) ff. 66 r°-71 v°a, dealing with the history of Clann tSuibhne, by Tadhg mac Fithil between the years 1532-44, with later entries by Torna mac Torna (ff. 71 v°b-72 r°b) and another. (c) ff. 73 r°-81 v°, tribal poetry, by Tadhg mac Fithil (ff. 74 r°-75 r°), Fergal mac Uilliam Óig (ff. 80 v°, 81 r°), Meallad Maigdine, a nickname (ff. 81 r°b m.-81 v°b), and other scribes, now unknown, nearly all of whom wrote for Domhnall (son of Toirrdhealbhach) Mac Suibhne (fl. 1619). Rev. Paul Walsh, who has given the ms. the title by which it is now known and catalogued its contents, identifies ff. 73 r°-73 v°a, 75 v°a-76 r°b m. as being in the hand of interpolator who has erased and emended text of Tadhg Mac Fithail on fo. 69 v°a (Leabhar Chlainne Suibhne, Introd., p. lix).

Lengthy entries have been made in the ms. by a former owner, Tadhg Ó Rodaighe [of Crossfield, Co. Leitrim]. Cf. ff. 73 v°, 75 r°, 81 v°.

The following colophons in the principal scribe's hand occur:—fo. 14r°b : "Me fecit Cithruad Mag Findgaill do sgrib so anuas gan cailc gan cubar le drochadme 7 ni buidech me fa comrad na haithci arer do Moir Ceir." fo. 16 r°b : "Ni maith tuicios Mor Ciar na focail si tís co foill : in med do connac ni fhacim ⁊ in med do cim ni fhaiceb ⁊ in med do bi ni fhuil ⁊ in med ata ni bia ⁊ in med bias ni beid. Anno d° m° ccccc. xiii." fo. 17 r° inf. marg.: "Bennacht ar anum Cithruaidh." fo. 37 v°a : "Andail in tigerna (see below, fo. 34 r°)." fo. 46 v°a: "Dob' i aess an Tigherna an trath do sgríbad an betha ssa C.c. do Máire inghin Eoghain I Máilli .i. xiiii ⁊ ccccc. ⁊ mili bliadhan. In la deghenach don mi Mai aniúgh ⁊ reliqua." fo. 54 v°b i. : "Me fecit in fer ó Toraigh do graif (altered by Tadhg Ó Rodaighe to 'graifnigh')." fo. 56 r°a m. : "Conad hi betha; ⁊ bás Catreachfína banoighe connice sin ⁊ Enog Ó Gillain da tairring a Laidin hí ⁊ mise mo fein ⁊ misgath ar mo conngaib uili et gach aon leghfis ⁊ estfis ⁊ meabrochus hi do geba nem do fein ⁊ don tríar oile bus ferr leis ⁊ reliqua." fo. 56 r°a i.: "Ailim trocairi De tria impidi Catrechfina banoige ar m' anam ⁊ ni hurusa mo goid aniugh o Shíli." fo. 58 r°b i. : "Miscath uaim ar in Cain Domnaig si oir ni fhuil acht ton eitir da sdol aici .i. do fhágaib si a cruas ⁊ ni ruc si ar buga ⁊ reliqua." fo. 64 r°b i. : "Me fieri Cithruad do graif gan cailc gan cubar la.[ ] na rainn si. Ando d° m° ccccc. " Cf. fo. 64 r°b m. : "me fieri Cithruad." The date is partly cut away.

Colophons, etc., in hands of other scribes are :—fo. 26 r°b: "Ag sin duit, a Eoin oig, o Dabhi Buidhe." fo. 57 v° i.: "Meisi Domhnall mac Feargail do sgribh sin ⁊ as tuirsech ataim a ndiaigh Fhanad" occurs after a marginal scribal quatrain. fo. 71 v°a : "Brian mac an tSaoir" (occurs after quatrain inserted in a blank space). fo. 71 v°a i. : "Tadhcc mac Fithail," etc. (see below, fo. 66 r°). 72 r°b, 1. 9 : "Misi Torna mac Torna do scribh." fo. 81 r°a : "Misi Fergal mac Uilliam Óig do sgríbh an dán sin ⁊ tabhradh gach aon léghfus bennacht ar m'anmain trúaigh." fo. 81 v°b : "Tabradh cech aon," etc. (see below, fo. 81 r°).

The following signatures and names occur in marginalia, indicating former ownership of the ms.:—"Donnchadh Ó Domhnaill (Dennis O Donnell)," ff. 8 r° i., 26 r° i., 39 r° i. (and "Charles McHue"?), 41 v° i, 46 r° right-hand marg., 51 r° i., 51 v°, 62 v° i., 80 r° i. ("Donatus O Donnell") ; "James O Donnell" and "Miles Sweeny of [ ]," 38 v° i; "John O Donnell, of Cross Connell [parish of Clonmany, Inishowen] 1761," 70 r° upper marg.; "Daniell McSwine (Swyny)," 43 v°; "this book was written for Mac Swine Fanett," 79 v° ; "Thadaeus Roddy (Tadhg Ua Rodoighe), 23 v° inf. marg. (dated 1687), 46 v°, right-hand marg., 54 v°, 73 v° b i. (dated 1697), 75 r° b, 81 v° b i.; "Eogan Caomanach," 34 r° (dated 1819), 44 r° (1819); "James McRedy of Fawe" (creditor to one "Owen O Gobbun of Gadiduff," parish of "Clunmany," barony of Inishowen, Co. Donegal), 61 v° i. Copy of summons, dated 17[65] addressed to some person unnamed, ordering him to appear at Lifford to give evidence on behalf of one John Nickelson occurs fo. 29 r° i. Marginal dates, e.g., "1819-1518 = 301" (fo. 47 r°), "1711" (fo. 50 v°), "1709" (fo. 66 r°) add nothing to our knowledge regarding the manuscript, as they stand either alone or as part of otherwise undecipherable late marginalia. The manuscript thus came into the possession of Tadhg Ó Rodaighe [of Crossfield] towards the end of the 17th cent., but appears to have been brought back to Donegal to the parish of Clonmany by 1761. In 1819 it was in the possession of Eoghan Caomhanach. About thirty years later (according to J. H. Lloyd in the Acad. Observations, 136) it was owned by Dr. Reeves. The binder's flyleaves bear the date 1852. In the Ulster Journal of Arch. ix., p. 21 (1861), O'Donovan stated that the manuscript was then in the possession of the Editor [Robert Mac Adam], see quotation on front flyleaf. The Auction Catalogue (1892) of Reeves mss., no. 852, identifies the handwriting in this entry as that of Robert Mac Adam; it is, however, that of Reeves himself.

The ms. is in good condition on the whole, with exception of the usual defaced front page, dark stains on ff. 48, 50, 51, 53, 79, and the decayed unnumbered folios bound in at the end of the volume. Fo. 40 seems to have been cut out, but is now sewn in crudely with silk thread. Some ornamental initials (cf. fo. 18 v° ff.) have been treated with silver paint, which has sunk through the vellum and injured the text. Bd. in half-vellum, gilt tooled. Reeves Collection, no. 42.

The earlier portion of Leabhar Chlainne Suibhne (ff. 1-65 v°) has much in common as regards contents with T.C.D., F 5 3, and Liber Flavus Fergusiorum.

The text corresponds generally to that of Liber Flavus Fergusiorum (23 O 48) copy. The first page is defaced, pointing to the fact that the preceding folio has been wanting for a considerable time. For an account of this text, which is a version of the Latin text as in Acta Sanct., May 1, p. 450, see Flower, B.M. Cat., ii, p. 527. Our copy seems to be same version as that contained in H 2 12, no. 3, and B.M. Eg. 1781 (of which Flower states that it is much closer to the original than the form found in LB, p. 227, being a later independent rendering). A copy of the Latin original is found in T.C.D., F 5 3, p. 66, col. 2 (Flower, loc. cit.), a ms. written in Ireland ca. 1455.
