E iv 3

Book of Ó Lochlainns

18th cent. Paper. 12¼ × 8. pp. 280 numbered, with 8 unnumbered pp. at beginning and many more at end. Scribe: Aindrias Mac Cruitín, in Moyglass (Magh-ghlas), Co. Clare, in 1727 (v. pp. 1, 108, 128, 171). Pp. 279-280, though in the scribe's hand, do not belong to the MS., and were formerly a loose and unpaged leaf. Between pp. 52 and 53 a leaf has been cut out; but the excision was probably made by the scribe, for there is no loss of text. Bd. in leather. Once owned by Seamuis Ó Morán, who has scrawled his name on P. 1. Formerly in Stowe and Ashburnham collections.

The MS. was copied (in part, at least) from a MS. which been written for the late Ó Lochlainn, viz. Donnchadh, son of Toirdhealbhach (see scribal note, p. 15). The present MS. was written for Brian Ó Lochlainn M.D. (cf. p. 1), whose marriage is celebrated in the poem on p. 279. A note in English, written in a hand other than the scribe's, near the end of the MS., tells us that "Doct Brien o Loghlen" died 18 Sept., 1734, and it also records the births of his children, Terence, Brien and Mary. Most of the volume deals with the O Lochlainns (16th-18th centt.) or kindred families, or with the legendary Ulidians from whom they were supposed to have sprung. The poems on pp. 15-24 are addressed to the contemporary Toirdhealbhach Ó Lochlainn or to his wife. The next four poems (pp. 25-28), and also those on pp. 33-34, deal with Donnchadh Ó L. (1714) and with his wife. The next three poems (pp. 36-39) deal with the father of this Donnchadh, viz. Toirdhealbhach Ó L. The following brief pedigree will show how these are related to the leading branch of the family in the sixteenth century :

(1) UAITHNE, of Gragan, lord of Burren, co. Clare, t 1590 (Fiants Eliz., 4761; FM.). His eldest son, Maoileachlainn (1562, FM.), was father of Uaithne, otherwise Uaithne Mór, of Muckinish and Glencolumb-kille, who died s.p. 1617 (FM. s.a. 1590; Fiants Eliz., 6562; Frost, History of Clare, pp. 307, 440).
