Catalogue of Irish Manuscripts in University College Dublin

A 20

ACALLAM NA SENÓRACH; DUANAIRE FINN

17th cent. Paper. 29.5 × 19.5 cms (first leaf smaller). Ff. (a) 1 + 134 [numbered 1-132 (with loss of 12-13, 30-33, 41, 43-4, 46, 113-14, 118-25), 114-39 (with loss of 123-4, 132)]; (b) [i]+94. Leaves have been cut out before (a) ff. 81, 98, 105, 115, 126. Single columns except in (b) f. [i] r; ruled in dry point. The first three folios of section (a) have been damaged with some loss of text and are mounted on transparent paper; some other leaves have also been slightly repaired. MS otherwise in excellent condition.

Scribes: (1) Niall gruamdha Ó Cathán (f. 1 r etc.) who wrote (a) ff. 1-98, 101-105 r m at Ostend (f. 56 r) and Louvain (f. 97 r) in 1626 (ff. 56 r, 84 v, 90 r, 97 r). Various jottings by him occur at the bottoms of pages in this section of the MS: 17 r ('Isum tuirsech a nÓistín an áir ~rl'), 18 v, 20 r ('ilim trocaire air Dia'), 21 r, 21 v, 22 v, 28 v, 35 v ('a lúcht leightha an liúbur guididh oirn ar son De, an sgribhneóir ro sgribh an leabur ~rl. .i. Niall gruamdha O Cathan'), 40 v, 48 r ('bídh aifur ina coda eile ar in garda don duilleog'), 48 v, 50 r ('guididh ar Niall O Catain ro sgribh só'), 51 r, 52 v, 53 r, 56 r ('. . . a nOistín in deichamh la .xx. September 1626, crich in leabhair conuici seo ~ go ndena Día trocairi ar in bfer ro sgribh .i. Niall gruamdha O Cathain cedna (?) ~ air fhir in liubur mur in cedna .i. Somhairle Mac Domhnaill ~rl'), 57 v, 64 v ('aniúgh trosgadh, lá S. Proinsíos mo patrúin beannaigh ~ co nguidhidh sé ar ar son do chum De nimhe Amen'), 68 v ('co ffoiri Día oirn oir ttindus amen ~ ar flier in liubhair ilmid trocuiri'), 78 v, 84 v ('1626'), 88 r, 90 r ('.16. October 1626'), 96 v, 97 r ('.2. desemper [1626 above line] a Lobhán don leabursa dá sgribhadh re Niall O Catain, ilim trocuire'). (2) Aodh Ó Dochartaigh, Ostend 1627 (see (b) ff. (39 v), 73 v, (89 v), 93 r), who wrote (a) ff. 99-100, 110-129 r, and all of (b), with the exception of the poem on f. 94 r m. For possible identification of this scribe see ITS XLIII (1954) 217. (3) Unidentified hands appear at (a) ff. 105 r m-109 v, 129 v-130 v, and (b) f. 94 r m. The MS was written for Capt. Somhairle Mac Domhnaill and probably came to Louvain after his death (ITS XLIII (1954) xi). Previously described by E. Mac Neill and G. Murphy, Duanaire Finn (ITS VII (1908) xvii-xx, XLIII (1954) ix-xi) and by P. Walsh (IER 30 (1927) 561-8 [=Irish chiefs and leaders (Dublin 1960) 129-39]; see also IBL 22 (1934) 81-8).

Bound in boards and vellum (tooled), bearing title 'Sgealta, Duanaire Finn' in gilt on spine and 'Anno 1628' and crest on front cover (see B. Jennings, ITS XLIII (1954) 219). The whole MS has been interleaved, the first leaf being backed by a blank sheet of paper. Numerous marginal notes and comments in Irish and Latin throughout the text of the Acallam; some notes in non-scribal hands also in Duanaire Finn.

Notes on first leaf: (a) 'Do bhidh usad an leabhair so ag an bhrathair bhocht Domhnaill Mhaglábhuin re toil na nuachtran an bhliaghan daoís an Tighirna 1792 or Maglone'. (b) 'Labhras O Cathalan / sgriobh so ann 1718'. (c) 'Et do bidh usad an leabhair so', (d) 'Labhras Ó Cathalan do sgriobh só an bhliaghain daois an tigerna 1718. Duine mer míarach súigach ganamnaígh suighalgach mormhenamnach ruinphártach fíolbhuir féalach múirnach grábhuir déabhathach'. Note in English and Flemish after poem on last leaf: (e) 'to Sister Sumusset att the English Geresan in Lier', 'Voor Suster Sumuset in de English Gresan tot Lier'.
