Ff. 18, numbered in pencil. No scribal signature.

Unbound; housed in paper folder marked `ms 1314/2 / (fols 7–15 [sic] were / formerly ms 1306)' (in pencil) on front cover; stab-holes; ff. 1–6 loose; ff. 7–18 held with narrow vellum thong passing through lower stab-hole, its tail (7cm) protruding from f. 7r, and its stub (1.5 x 1.5 cm) visible in opening of ff. 12v/13r. ms numbers `H. 2. 12 / No. 16' and `1314/2' (in pencil) in lower margin of f. 1r; `1314/2' (in pencil), inner margin, f. 1r; `Olim H. 28', `1306' (in pencil, cancelled), `1314/2 / contd.' (in pencil), and `H. 2. 12 / 5', f. 7r, upper margin; `[? vol ii] of 1306 / Foliated [? Feb] 1979 / ff. 18' (in pencil), f. 18vb in space left blank foll. end of text; remains of label affixed to outer margin of f. 18v, obscuring opening words of f. 18va24–37, bears foll. in Gaelic script: `e / [.] / [.] / [.] / do comhair[? l ...]' (in 17th cent. (?) hand); fragment of paper label affixed to inner margin of f. 18v.

Collation: i6 (correct order of leaves: 3, 2, 1, 6, 5, 4), ii12 (ff. 7–18). Signature: `a' (f. 5v, lower margin, outer corner). Double columns, ruled in brown, with single inner, and double (?) outer bounding lines, 51–64 lines (43–54 lines on decayed folios, ff. 1–6; innermost line of outer bounding lines for col. b only visible at f. 10v, where ruling grid is clearest; triple (?) outer bounding lines at col. a, f. 6r); remains of prick marks for double columns visible on upper and lower margins of most leaves (in lower margins only in decayed leaves, ff. 1–6); f. 8r, upper margin, cropped with loss of set of prick marks for inner bounding lines. Vellum defective ff. 10–11, 13–15, 18; tear and slight hole, f. 5, lower margin. Initials in text (5- to 1-line) plain; rubrication of initials, capital letters, and also of ceann fo eite and line-fillers, in ff. 3, 2 and 1r, with rubrication entirely discontinued thereafter; obverse of heavily inked initials occasionally showing through (e.g. f. 1r, between cols); marginal pointers of various shapes throughout (e.g. inner margins of ff. 8r, 11r); marginal pointer at f. 1r, outer margin, continues (?) on f. 1v, outer margin; quaestiones at ff. 9rb8 and 9vay signalled by contraction for quaestio placed in facing margins (viz. f. 9r, between cols, and f. 9v, outer margin, respectively); numbering of text frequently repeated in margins (e.g. f. 6r, inner margin and between cols); text of ff. 3vbz, 16rbz extending into lower margin boxed; textual omissions or corrections supplied in margins: ff. 5v (between cols), 7v (outer margin), 10r (inner margin), 12r (upper margin), 14r (upper margin, for f. 14ra24), 14r (outer margin), 14v (upper margin, for 14vb8), 16v (lower margin). General staining throughout; some large localised stains (e.g. ff. 3–5), with staining on f. 18v penetrating to previous leaves; f. 7r somewhat darkened and f. 18v stained and rubbed, suggesting their use for some time as outer covers; slight tears in outer edges. Ff. 7–17 heavily stained in upper outer corners (contracted and puckered) and along outer edge of upper two thirds of leaf, with writing obscured and with occasional illegibility of final words of lines in col. b recto, and of opening words of lines in col. a verso (e.g. ff. 11rb, 11va); similar pattern of staining and occasional illegibility (e.g. ff. 1rb, 1va) in surviving outer edges of ff. 1–6, the upper two thirds of these leaves being now severely damaged and decayed at outer, upper and inner edges, with significant loss of text in both cols; upper outer half of f. 18 torn away diagonally with significant loss of text on col. b recto and col. a verso; part of lower inner edge of f. 18 also torn away with slight loss of text in f. 18raz;

Scribal jotting at f. 4r, lower margin, outer corner: `amen' (i.e. ms a\=m) with `am' repeated immediately below.

1–18.   Tract on purging comprising four parts, viz. (a) ff. 3, 2, 1ra1–36; (b) ff. 1ra37-vbz, 6, 5, 4ra1-va2; (c) ff. 4va3–bz, 7ra1–13va41; (d) ff. 13va42–18vb36; catalogued here as individual items, the four texts occur in the manuscript in unbroken sequence and were perhaps regarded as constituting a single entity.
