Liber Flavus Fergusiorum

15th cent. Vellum. Ca, 11 × 8 (vol. i, ff. 3, 12, 23 being mere slips of vellum). Of the original ms., 92 ff. remain, bound in two volumes, the first containing 37, the second 55 ff. An early foliation standing on the verso points to the fact that at one period the ff. 1-37 (earlier foliation 55-92) now forming vol. i stood before fo. 44 (earlier foliation 95) of vol. ii. Following Gwynn, The Manuscript known as the Liber Flavus Fergusiorum, Proc. R.I.A., xxvi, C, p. 15 ff., the present cataloguer indicates within brackets below this earlier foliation of the ms. (where it is decipherable) while following the present order of the folios. Since others, notably Plummer, Catalogue of Irish Hagiography, Misc. Hagiogr. Hib., p. 171 ff., use a different system of reference, it may be well to indicate briefly here the various numerations which appear on the ms., viz., (a) verso, upper margin, the foliation already referred to, judged by Gwynn, loc. cit., p. 17, to be in a hand of the sixteenth century. It begins with vol. ii and is partly indecipherable, but originally read 1-108 (excluding the three short folios), thus showing that a considerable portion of the original ms. is now missing. (5) recto, lower margin, a foliation by gatherings : vol. i, 1 (1-14), 2 (1-10), 3 (1-7), 4 (1-6); vol. ii, 1 (1-12), 2 (1-13), 3 (1-8), 4 (1-10), 5 (1-12). This numeration was obviously intended only as a direction to the binder; it is that used by Plummer when referring to this ms. (c) recto, lower margin, a recent pencilled pagination extending only to vol. i, p. 39. (d) recto, upper margin (vol. i), lower margin (vol. ii), a recent pencilled foliation which indicates the present order of the ms. and is the numeration followed in the table of contents below.

The ms., which bears the dates 1437 (vol. i, fo. 29 r° a m.), 1440 (vol. ii, fo. 1 r° a, see below), has hitherto been regarded as the work of one scribe, written at various times (Gwynn, op. cit.;, p. 15). Though the lapse of time between the transcription of items (there is no direct proof of this in the case of the Liber Flavus) may account for considerable variation in the character of handwriting, the present cataloguer believes that several scribes cooperated in the work of transcription, viz., (a) the scribe whose hand is familiar to students through O'Curry's facsimile specimen Lectures on the MSS. Materials of Ancient Irish History, Facsimiles, p. 14. Liber Flavus, vol. i : ff. 1-24 v° a ; vol. ii : ff. 13-24, 26-34 v°, 35 v° to the end. This hand in vol. ii resembles b infra. (b) vol. i : ff. 25 r° a-v° b, 30 v° a m. to end of volume; vol. ii: f. 35 r° a-b. (c) vol. i : ff. 27 v° a, 1. 25-30 v° a m. (d) vol. ii : ff. 1-12, 25 r° a-v° b. (e) vol. i: ff. 26 r° a-27 v° a, 1. 24. Entries in a later hand appear on fo. 24 v° b. The identity of any one of these scribes is not certain. A colophon in the hand of scribe (a) occurs vol. i, fo. 23 r° b (see below) stating that he is Donnchadh Ó Maelehonuiri (identified by Gwynn, op. cit., p. 15, as Donnchadh Bán Ó Maelchonaire, ob. 1404), but the dates 1437 (vol. i, fo. 29 r° a m.) and 1440 (vol. ii, fo. 1 r° a) though not actually in this scribe's hand appear to forbid the acceptance of this colophon as other than a copy of an entry in the scribe's exemplar. The colophon signed Aedh, vol. i, fo. 15 v° b (see below) is in the style of script used by (e) above, but the later retracing makes identification uncertain. There is no indication as to who this Aedh may have been. Though other scribes are mentioned by name in marginalia (see below) it has not been found possible to identify any of them with the transcribers of the Liber Flavus itself.

All the indications of locality (see Gwynn, op. cit., pp. 15-16) place the ms. in Roscommon, so we are probably safe in assuming that it is definitely of Connacht provenance.

The following colophons occur in the ms. :—

vol. i, fo. 15 v° b. "As olc an gles so et an dubh leis. Beatha 7 slainte cum fir an leabhair seo o Aedh" (see above).

fo. 23 r° b. " Seaan ó Concubair do cuir na becan sa a nGaedhilg ⁊ Donnchadh Ó Maelconuiri do sgribh a Lis Aedhain a Ciarraigi Airdi a tigh Ruaighrighi Uí Uiginn le deifir moir ⁊ ailim trocuire o Críst." According to Gwynn, op. cit., p. 15, this colophon is copied from the scribe's exemplar. "Lis Aedhain" Gwynn identifies as Lissian, a townland in the barony of Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon. "Ciarraige Airde" is an error for "Ciarraige Airtich," a district comprising the parishes of Tibohine and Kilnamanagh. For "Seaan Ó Concubair" (ob. F.M. 1391), "Ruadri [Ruadh] Ó Huiginn" (ob. F.M. 1425), "Donnchadh [Bán] Ó Maolchonaire," hereditary ollamh of the Síl Muireadhaigh (ob. F.M. 1404, Au. 1405), see Gwynn, op. cit., pp. 15-16.

For "Uidhisdín Mag Raighin," a canon of Saints' Island in Lough Rea (ob. 1405), see Gwynn, op. cit., p. 16, and Plummer, Z.C.P. v, p. 453.

Names of scribes, former owners, etc., occurring in marginalia are as follows:—

(inverted), "Richard M'Cauell (?)," apparently signature of a former owner of the ms. ; fo. 30 r°, sup. marg., "Ni maith na comartai ata agad, a Thomais, aniudh forte gu mba mar sin, acht is bas do chrich dom aitnidsi, Misi Tadg." The ink used here is different from that of the ms. a,t this point. Fo. 38 r°, inf. marg., "Cummortas annso ris an Cimanach do sgr[i]bh an cail" (later hand), fo. 45, centre marg., "Anthony Connell."

The ms. is in fairly good condition. Some leaves are badly stained with consequent complete or partial obliteration of their contents, e.g., vol. i, fo. 1 r°, vol. ii, ff. 1, 2, 43 v°, 44 r°, 54, 55; the outer margins of vol. ii are also as a rule badly stained, particularly from fo. 51 to the end. The lower margin of vol. ii, fo. 32, has been cut away; a piece has been cut out of fo. 41 lower margin; there is a; recent tear in fo. 51, and a hole burnt in fo. 53. The further defects in the vellum would seem to be original defects. Initial letters and incipits are coloured throughout vol. i, ff. 25-37, vol. ii, 1-55, but vol. i, ff. 1-24 are left uncoloured. Vol. i, fo. 24 v° a-b, was originally left blank but now contains entries in a later hand. Chasms (in addition to those indicated by the earlier foliation) occur in the ms. : vol. i, after ff. 3 and 31 (82); vol. ii, before fo. 1, after ff. 25 (14 misplaced), 38, and 51. There are misplacements of single leaves, viz., vol. i, fo. 7 (59), should precede fo. 6 (60), and fo. 9 (61) should precede fo. 8 (62). Vol. ii. 25 (14) should follow fo. 12 (13). Bd. in calf.

The ms. was (according to Gwynn, op. cit., p. 16) at one time the property of a Dr. John Fergus, probably of Galway (the Johannes Fergus, m.d., of bookplate inside front cover) who died in 1761, the present title of the ms. indicating that it had been an heirloom of the Fergus family. Dr. Fergus bequeathed the Liber Flavus to his daughter who married a Kennedy. The table of contents of vol. ii written by James Marinus Kennedy which is inserted in the ms. ends with the following note:—"Copied from the Index of the two ms. volumes or parts called Liber Flavus Fergusiorum made by Mr. E. Curry and dated the 11th of June, 1841. The late Mr. James Hardiman (the historian of Galway) had the care of them at that period, being lent to him many years prior by my father, the late Macarius John Kennedy. James Marinus Kennedy." The ms. bears inside back cover of vols. i, ii the bookplate of "James Marinus Kennedy" and also that of "Thos. Kennedy" of Jervais Street, Dublin, a note in whose hand states that the volumes were lent to Dr. Leland, but gives no date (see inside front cover, vols. i, ii). The ms. was deposited in the Academy in 1875 by John Marinus Kennedy, at the instance of Sir J. T. Gilbert. Inserted in the ms. is a memorandum dated 28 January, 1875, by J. T. Gilbert : "This and its companion volume (Part ii) are the property of James M. Kennedy, Esq., 15, Lower Mount St., Dublin, and are to be returned to him on demand. See Minutes of Council of 1st February, 1875." In 1907 (acc. to the Minutes of the Council of that year) the Liber Flavus was purchased by the Academy from the heirs of John Marinus Kennedy for the sum of £35.
