Introduction

Pádraig Ó Macháin

This manuscript was written in 1833 by Dáibhidh de Barra of Dungourney in east Co. Cork. Daibhidh (1757/8 – 1851) was an important and prolific scribe, poet and writer, and this manuscript adds to the works written by him that are enumerated in Breandán Ó Conchúir, Scríobhaithe Chorcaí 1700-1850 (Dublin 1982) 8-13. The manuscript supplies evidence of work of Dáibhidh’s that was thought not to have survived, namely translations of English prayer books into Irish (ibid, 251). In addition, the manuscript contains an autograph poem on pp. 230-35.

Information, kindly supplied by Dr Val Noone, shows that the donor of the manuscript ‘the Revd. Dr Barry’ is to be identified with Dr John Barry (c.1816-1870) who was in Melbourne from 1856 to 1863, serving in the church of St Francis and at St Patrick’s College. Born in Watergrasshill, Co. Cork, he was doubtless a near relative of the scribe, and is probably the John Barry recorded as attending Maynooth College, 1838-44 (Patrick Hamill, Maynooth students and ordinations (Birr 1982) 28).
