MS 10357

Introduction

Pádraig Ó Macháin

This and MS RARES 091 C76 are companion volumes, written by the same unidentified scribe, and presumably with the same O’Shanessy provenance (see description of RARES 091 C76). Matter on p. [136] indicates associations with Eoghan Ó Comhraidhe (Eugene (O’)Curry), while indebtedness in matter of script and contents to the scribal work of Éinrí Mac an tSaoir is noted in the description of MS RARES 091 C76. MS 10357 is a miscellany of prose and verse, the prose consisting of the story of the Children of Lir. The poetry consists of a mixture of eighteenth-century Munster verse, Ossianic poetry, some items of Ulster poetry, and at least one item (‘Tír na nGrásaigh’ p. 120) associated with a printed source contemporary with the manuscript (see Colm Ó Lochlainn, ‘Literary forgeries in Irish’, Éigse: a Journal of Irish studies 2/2 (1940) 123-36).

Of the Munster poetry the main concentration is that of the work of Uilliam Ó Lionáin (fl. 1777), a Kerry poet who settled in Clare. (See Padraig Ó Macháin, ‘An Irish manuscript in Edinburgh University Library’, Scottish Gaelic Studies 15 (1988) 98-102). Related collections of Ó Lionáin’s poems are to be found in Royal Irish Academy MS 1386 (23 O 77) and National Library of Ireland MS G 1009(b).

In the 20th century notes were added (see ‘Notes and jottings’ below) to the end matter of the manuscript by the noted Irish-Australian Thomas F. Culhane (for whom see Home thoughts from abroad: the Australian letters of Thomas F. Culhane (Glin, Glin Historical Society 1998)) who also has notes in MS RARES 091 C76 .
