15th and 16th cent. Vellum. Pp. 52, paginated in pencil on rectos only, 1–[52] (skipping 41, repeating 43), and bearing an earlier foliation in ink. Scribes: (1) pp. 1a1–2bz, no scribal signature; (2) main scribe, pp. 3a1–4b33 and 4b37–23b10 together with associated marginal and interlinear text (gloss, commentary etc.), Diarmaid O Dubugan writing for one ‘Uilliam O Loingsib’ (p. 23b4–10); (3) p. 4b34–6 (evidently in erasure of text of main scribe), 23b11–z, 24a6–bz, no scribal signature; in this hand also extensive interlinear and marginal additions (glosses, corrections, commentary etc.) to texts written by main scribe in pp. 3–21b32, 23a51–b3, passim; (4) 24a1–6, no scribal signature; in this hand also: p. 14, outer margin (commentary, 3 ll.), p. 19, inner margin (commentary, 27 ll.); occasional corrections to, and glosses on, text written by main scribe on p. 19; (5) p. 21ai (interlinear and marginal glosses), no scribal signature; (6) pp. 25a1–43b57; 45a35–52bz, no scribal signature; (7) pp. 43b58–45a34, no scribal signature; (8) p. 2by–z; jottings (c) and (d), no scribal signature.

Bound in full calf. Collation [tentative]: i¹², ii^{8 + 6} (pp. 35–46 inserted after 5); loss after i and ii; textual sequence shows leaves in pp. 25–52 to be grouped follows: (1) 25–34, 47–52; (2) 35–46, with chasm between 52 and 35; this indicates that ii was originally an eight (pp. 25–34, 47–52), and that pp. 35–46 are misplaced. Composite manuscript comprising three parts, viz.: (a) pp. 1–24; (b) pp. 25–34, 47–52; (c) pp. 35–46.

Ruling and ornamentation. (a) Double columns with single inner and outer bounding lines, 34–83, ruled in brown; text tabulated in two columns, p. 24b22–51, in three columns, p. 12b35–57, in four columns, p. 3b68–4a10. Marginal text written in smaller script than that used in text-area; legal texts on pp. 16b–18a, 19a–21b written on double-spaced lines, with interlinear glosses in small neat script; lines of legal text on p. 23a51–b3 single-spaced, with interlinear glossing cramped. Remains of pricking for horizontal text-lines visible in outer margins of pp. 3–16, 21–2. Major initial with rudimentary ornamentation, p. 3a1, unrubricated; section-initials plain (e.g. p. 4a11), frequently only partially filling space reserved for them (e.g. p. 4a47), and occasionally filled in by scribe 3 (e.g. p. 11b1); guide-letters written in margins and spaces reserved for initials (5- to 3-line) at pp. 4b12, 5b22, 6a15, 8a34, 11b32, 12a50, 12b32, 13a64, 14a74, 15a16, 15b31, 16a15, 59, 16b25, 21b33 but initials not filled in. Initials in text (both those in text-area proper and those in marginal text of both scribes 2 and 3), incipits of texts, or subsections of texts, capitals, ceann fo eite, and various other words, letters and devices (such as elongated descenders (e.g. p. 3az), ogham lettering (e.g. p. 11by), reference marks (e.g. p. 12b, inner margin), dúnadh (e.g. p. 22a31)), frequently coloured red, pp. 3–5, 7–23b3 (spots of red ink placed on or over certain words/letters in p. 6 appear to be haphazard); rubrication of marginal material confirms that rubrication in this section of the manuscript took place after scribes 2 and 3 had both completed their work therein; no rubrication in section (a) after p. 23b3. No catchwords but final three words of previous page repeated as opening words on p. 24. (b) Double columns with single inner and outer bounding lines, 61–83 lines, ruled in dry point. First line of chapter (first three lines in opening chapter, p. 25a1) in display script, also opening word(s) of some subsections of text; incipit of bk 2.2 on hernia (p. 31bw), however, in normal script. Opening initials (9- to 3-line), with guide-letters in margin, elaborately ornamented, pp. 25a1, 32b17, 34a30, 52a47, and richly coloured red and yellow (faded, p. 25a); minor initials (3-line to 1-line) generally plain (rudimentary ornamentation p. 51b34). Text in display script, minor initials, capital letters, ceann fo eite, line-fillers, and occasional other letters or words frequently coloured red and/or yellow (red only pp. 26–30, yellow only p. 47). Text continued below column p. 34, and textual omission in outer margin of p. 48 framed below, with space between text and border coloured yellow; symbol for quaestio, p. 48, between cols.
