MS 23 P 16 (An Leabhar Breac)

Catalogue of Irish Manuscripts in Royal Irish Academy

23 P 16

An Leabhar Breac

Early 15th cent. Vellum. Ca. 15 × 10 (pp. 57, 58, 15 × 3½; pp. 185, 186, 7 × 9¾; pp. 199, 200, 6¾ × 9¾). For convenience of reference, the pagination given in this catalogue is that of the Facsimile (1876). Ff. 142, now bound in two volumes. Volume I of the ms. bears five numerations in ink (with pencilled emendations), viz., (a) pagination beginning with the present p. 109 and ending with p. 202. This reads 1-90, skipping the short leaves now numbered 185, 186, 199, 200. This pagination shows the arrangement of Vol. I in 1789, when it was acquired by the Royal Irish Academy. (b) Pagination which can be traced only on the present pp. 59-74, 243-262, and reads 3-18, 19-38. (c) A faded foliation, 1-131, which represents a rearrangement of the ms. since it came into the Academy Library. O'Curry (Acad. Cat., p. 588) is evidently referring to this rearrangement when he complains of the misplacing of leaves in binding since the book came to the R.I.A. The binding referred to is possibly that carried out by "George Mullen, Dublin 1831" (see infra). The ms. has since been rebound, according to O'Curry's instructions, and now includes two folios bearing no numeration other than that added by O'Curry, viz., pp. 238 a, 238 b, 238 c, 238 d, which were still in the possession of Mr. George Smith of College Green in 1844, when O'Curry drew up his ms. catalogue of Vol. I acc. to foliation (c), which stands in the rearranged and rebound ms. in the following order :—1-9, 12, 10, 11, 13-27, 112-[121], 28-92, 94, 93, 95-98., 100, 99, 101-109; next two folios (pp. 238 a-d) unknown to the foliator, [110], 111, 122-131. (d) A pagination in roman numerals i-l which runs consecutively on pp. 1-50. (e) The present pagination that of the Facsimile, which runs 1-238, 238 a-d, 239-262. Vol. II bears no visible numeration except a pagination which runs 1-18 (Facsimile 263-280). A note in the ms. itself signed "T.G." states that the ms. consisted of one hundred and forty-four leaves in 1708. Chasms ignored by the numerator occur after pp. 6, 186, 204, 210, 238, 238 d, 260 and at end of ms. The number of folios missing at each point depends largely on the difference between the present and the original composition of the gatherings. The normal gathering appears to be the quinion, but the bound state of the ms. forbids all further investigation at present. The history of the ms. previous to 1708 suggests that, as it was in careful custody until ca. 1700 (see infra), we may possess the ms. practically intact. It bears on p. 47 i., in a later hand, the title "Leabur Mor Duna Daidhri," which it bore while located in Dún Daighre. The name by which it is now generally known does not occur on the ms. itself. Various members of the Mac Aedhagáin family of Dún Daighre sign their names to marginal entries in the ms. (see Marginalia infra) at different given dates between 1554 (p. 190 i.) and 1601 (p. 226), but the ms. itself apparently derives from the Mac Aedhagáin Law School at Cluain Lethan in Múscraige Tíre (pp. 28, 42, 89, 119). Some texts were copied in other places, e.g. Cluain Mac Nois (p. 245), Cluain Sostai Berchain (p. 212), Mag Ua Fargiai (p. 101), and for bru Brosnaige a mBaile Riccín a nElib Thuaiscirt (p. 192), etc. The references to Dun Daighre and its environs seem to be later additions; they refer to Marginalia or are entered on leaves originally blank. Cf., however, pp. 2, 197. The date of writing is attested by the entry on p. 175 i., which records the death of Cobhthach Ó Madaghain, abbot of Cluain Ferta Brénainn, the next in succession to Eoghan Ó Madaghain, chief of Síl nAnmchadha, who is stated to be at the point of death. The deaths of Eoghan and Cobhthach Ó Madaghain, took place in 1411 (A.U., F.M., sub anno). The ms., apart from the Marginalia, appears to be the work of one hand, with the exception of pp. 69 b, 11. 25-32, pp. 72-73, and the insertions on originally blank spaces, e.g. pp. 185, 186, 200, 201. On p. 254 the hand changes in size every few lines, as if the work were done at different times; col. a, 1. 41, seems to be a different hand. Allowance must, however, be made for the facility with which the penman can turn from large to small script. There is no signature which can be identified with certainty as that of the original scribe, or scribe-compiler, who was, according to tradition, a member of the Mac Aedhagáin family (O'Curry, loc. cit., p. 581). On p. 109 i. "Misi Solam" appears to be old, but has been treated with a reagent, and rest of inscription is effaced in consequence. The name Solamh occurs frequently in Clann Aedhagáin pedigrees. The entry "Messi Siaccas fer in liubair se" (p. 59) is the signature of an owner merely; it too seems to be fairly old. The handwriting is in double column throughout, with the exception of pp. 57, 58, 199, 200. The lining, where visible (pp. 234-6), is by dry-point. The capitals are generally simple, but some fine interlaced capitals of zoomorphic design occur on pp. 75, 79, 81, 97, 113, 145, 221. Capitals on pp. 13, 66, 85, 99, 248, 259 are left in colour outline, betraying the method of work of the artist. The colour throughout, with the exception of the vermilion and chrome used, has suffered unusual deterioration, as if it were of later inferior quality. A note in the book (in a later hand) informs us that the ms. "was painted" (p. 106); that this is actually the case is shown by the added colour on early Marginalia throughout. Red and yellow; red and blue; red, blue and yellow are used in these combinations, or singly. Prolific use is made of vermilion, the initial Ms in the genealogies, pp. 13-21, being illuminated throughout. The natural defects in the vellum are brought into the general scheme of decoration, e.g. on p. 253. This can hardly be attributed to the unskilled later hand which is responsible for most of the colour-work on this ms. It is, perhaps, of importance to notice that colouring is entirely absent from Vol. II. A graceful diagram stands on p. 121, and a drawing of the Crucifixion on p. 166. The simple yet charming effect of the interlacing of the letter B on p. 217 reveals the hand of an artist. A later hand appears to have added marks of aspiration, etc., as the ink has faded. The vellum throughout is uneven in texture, being thin and transparent in places, so that the ink has come through the membrane, e.g. pp. 22-29, 45-49, 109, 123, 186, 225, 227. The red-ink stamp of the Royal Irish Academy has been carelessly used on pp. 35, 67, 181, 243, and a blot of red ink mars p. 35. Recent ink stains stand on p. 254. A reagent has been used by someone unknown on marginal notes (passim) and even on text, rendering decipherment impossible in many cases. The margins of pp. 1-262 are damaged, but have been mended with vellum. Unimportant jottings in the hand of O'Daly (see infra) and others occur frequently throughout. P. 55 is yellowed and darkened, only two round spots remaining to show original colour of vellum. Pp. 72, 73 are very rubbed. Pp. 109, 110 are damaged, and show plainly that this leaf once stood as the outer leaf of the ms. (see supra). Book-worm has injured pp. 117-120, sup. marg. Pp. 241, 242 are spotted by damp, apparently. The vellum is hard and brittle here and at pp. 238 c-240. A similar brittleness of pp. 257-262 seems to be due to exposure to fire. Pp. 241, 242 have loosened from the margin on which this single leaf is mounted. The crude mends with thread, coloured as if they formed part of the scheme of decoration, would appear to have existed before pp. 179, 195 were written on. The vellum leaves of Vol. II are shrivelled, and the inner top margins are discoloured and defaced, see pp. 1, 9-12, 16, 17, 18. Pp. 159, col. b i., 181, col. a i., 186, col. b, are blank, and the last page of Vol. II is blank save for a few lines of text. The volumes are now bound in leather, gilt-lettered (Vol. I) : "Leabhar Breac MS. Royal Irish Academy"; (Vol. II) "L. Breac MS. II, R.I.A." Both have black American cloth covers in addition. Earlier cover of Vol. I., calf, blind-tooled, bearing binder's name and date, "George Mullen, 1831," is in the Royal Irish Academy's possession. Former Acad. nos.: Vol. I, 40/6 (O'Curry, loc. cit., p. 581); Vol. II, 3/67 (Hodges and Smith Collection, no. 224, former shelf no. 23 H l j).

Vol. I has been in the Royal Irish Academy Library since 1789 (see infra). Pp. 238 a-238 d did not form part of the ms. in 1844, although recognized by O'Curry as part of it; they were at that time still in the possession of Mr. George Smith of College Green, Dublin. Vol. II was catalogued by O'Curry in 1842 (see Hodges & Smith's Cat., p. 708); these nine leaves were not then held to be part of our ms. Vol. II, and the pp. 238 a-238 d, were acquired by Mr. Smith from the collection of Chevalier O'Gorman, who obtained them in 1789 from Cornelius O'Daly of Mitchelstown, Co. Cork. The ms. being in loose staves at the time, O'Daly was unaware that these leaves formed part of the ms. known to him as "An Leabhar Breac." He sold "An Leabhar Breac" to Vallancey (for the Royal Irish Academy) in 1789, for three guineas, stating that it was the property of his father, whose hand appears in marginal jottings passim. It came into his father's possession some time previous to 1768, since Dr. John O'Brien (Lord-Bishop of Cloyne, and author of an Irish-English dictionary published in 1768) had it on loan from him before that date. The ms. is cited as a source by Dr. O'Brien. See Letters of D. Conroy, Cornelius O'Daly, and Charles Vallancey, printed in full, Facs. (1876), Introd., xi-xiii. It does not appear to be the "Leabhar Breac Mic Aodhagáin" cited by Keating, Forus Feasa, iii. p. 294, which was a "seinleabhar annálach"; possibly the name of the lost ms. mentioned by Keating has been transferred by error, since our ms. was known to Br. Michael Ó Cléirigh in 1629 as "Leabhar Dhúna Doighre" (Bruxelles, Bibliothéque royale, 2324-40, fo. 59).

It is clear that in 1732, to judge from an entry in the ms. itself, see Marginalia, p. 221, it was in the possession of Éamann Ó Ceallaigh [of Tonalig, Co. Roscommon], who is known to have had a number of mss. at this time. Initials "T.G." [Thomas Glyn], "1708," occur p. 179 (O'Curry, loc. cit., p. 589). The Lector O'Fathaigh, whose name occurs on p. 270, has been identified (Jennings, Michael Ó Cléirigh, p. 89) as Fr. Patrick Fahy, Lector of Theology, who was made Guardian of Cenél Féichín convent on 23rd July, 1699, and was succeeded by Fr. Nicholas De Burgo on 17th Oct., 1700. Since pp. 272-7 were copied by Br. Michael Ó Cléirigh in the convent of Cenél Féichín on 3rd Oct., 1629, it is certain that the ms. was in the possession of the convent of Cenél Féichín during the greater part of the 17th century. MacAedhagáin signatures occur in the ms. on to the opening years of the 17th century, the last dated signature being that of " Uilliam (Mac Feraoil) Mac Aodhagain," "1601" (p. 226). There is thus no doubt that the original owners kept the book until this date, or later. Its timely removal from its presumed original habitat, Cluain Lethan, to Dún Daighre was a fortunate chance, as a marginal note in the ms. itself records the plundering of the famous Law School ("Ardchathair Fénechais Érenn") at Cluain Lethan (p. 20, sup. marg.). It is probable that the ms. was transferred from Dún Daighre to Cenél Féichín for greater safety at the beginning of the 17th century, when the old order was breaking up. The high regard in which it was held is shown in the marginal note on p. 60 i., where "Ferghal mac Uilliam" calls it "in cuilmend oll." The early anonymous Marginalia are as carefully written, as the text itself, and it is difficult at times to distinguish between these early hands and that of the main scribe. No formal distinction is made below between them. Attention is, however, drawn to later non-scribal Marginalia, but these are included only where they throw light on the history of the ms.
