Adv. MS 72.1.6

(Gaelic MS VI). GENEALOGIES.

Mackinnon, ff.84, 110, 181; Mackechnie, f.14.

15–16th cent. Vellum. 13 ff. Folio and under. Three distinct and separate layers, of which the third served as a cover for the rest. All betray signs of binding and rebinding; Mackinnon says that ff.1–11 “were formerly stitched together with thong and thread”. They were repaired and squared up with vellum inserts while in the Advocates’ Library. Kilbride no.22 by Major MacLachlan’s enumeration (“22 Genealogy”, f.13v). No.2 by Hugh Kerr’s. The latter’s name or initials appear at ff.7r, 8r and 13v. Foliation modern. Catalogued by Mackechnie in a disarranged condition; his numbering is now converted as follows, and is added below in brackets for reference.

M 1 = 12M 5 = 10M 9 = 6
M 2 = 13M 6 = 3M 10 = 5
M 3 = 8M 7 = 4M 11 = 2
M 4 = 9M 8 = 1M 12 = 7
M 13 = 11

First layer (ff.1–6)

A gathering. 20.5 – 23.5 × 19.5 cms. Contains Uí Néill pedigrees, versions corresponding to many of which may be found in BB 69–86. See also M.A. O’Brien, Corpus Genealogiarum Hiberniae (Dublin, 1962), pp.160–80. Written in two, three, five or six columns. Hands:

1. Text. Chief hand of Adv.MS.72.1.28, q.v. Capitals here coloured red.

2. Ff.1v (“bro”), 4v (“a”). Large. Cf. Adv.MS.72.1.10, f.6v.

3. F.2r (“a Muiri mor m ai asi sud”). Small, precise.

4. F.3r: pedigree of Donald, Lord of the Isles, (d.?1423). Clumsily written. Part re-inked, part illegible. The plaintive comment “A Dé ⁊ a Muire, is mor dona genelachaibh sin nach bfuil fis agam ar bit ce hiad” (5r) appears to be in a smaller and less formal version of the same hand, particularly reminiscent of hand 1 of Adv.MS.72.1.20 as it appears at f.6v of that manuscript.

5. F.5v (“a Dia gu”). Hand 8 of Adv.MS.72.1.27?

6. F.5v: Gach uad folamh fuicfidhear, 1 q. Small.

Various insignificant marginalia appear in addition to the above, hands uncertain. There is some erased material. Despite damp-staining, the only substantial textual loss is at f.6, due to the action of rodents. One or two names are lost at f.5r through careless cutting of the leaf.

The eighth visible step, recte mhic Gilla Bride, is partly rubbed or erased and the remaining letters have been tampered with. Ends incomplete after 29th step: “mhic Maoith mhic Gaire mic”; the top margin of f.9, where it would have been continued, has been cut off. Cf. Third layer (ff.12–13)

The layer is described by Grosjean in Analecta Bollandiana 47 (Brussels, 1929), p.39. He hazarded from the text that it may be part of a manuscript inventoried as found in Br. John Colgan’s cell at Louvain on his death in 1658. (Ériu 10, p.161.) It was at one time folded in four. F.13v is almost totally illegible, and f.12r substantially so, but most parts of the inside pages have escaped damage.

12 (1)r.a1 CONQUESTS OF CHARLEMAGNE appear to begin here with word (B)eatha. Becomes more legible at 12v.a1 [a]nnsa Spain diball ib……..an delbh Mac[am]etus neach ata sa tir, cf. Hyde’s very different version, ITS 19, p.10. Ends 13r.a18 “co saer Serlus o lamaib namh. Conat iad sin imtechta Serluis conuigi si”.
