16th cent. (?). Vellum. Ca. 11 X 8. Ff. 91, first three paginated, foliation 4—90 (with duplication of the number “33”) beginning with the fourth folio. Two unnumbered leaves (catalogued below as pp. [1] —[4]) are bound in at end of ms. Scribe: Muiris Ó Clérigh (see ff. 29b i., 87vb i.). No date or place of writing is given by the scribe. A late calculation, in Charles O’Conor’s hand (fo. 80 recto), suggesting that the ms. dates from before 1480 may be neglected. On p. [4] of paper leaves Doimnic Ó Duibhgeannain signs an item. The handwriting is in double! column; the ruling in brown with marginal prickings. There are many natural defects in the vellum, which is of uneven quality. Apart from these the main defects are due to the loosening by damp of repair sections of vellum affixed to ff. 50, 57, before the ms. was written (cf. ff. 30, 55, 60, 62, where the repairs are still intact). Ff. 19, 48 are badly damaged. Stains occur on ff. 1, 5-7, 11 verso, 12 recto, 31 verso, 32 recto. Obvious chasms, ignored by the foliator, occur in the text after ff. 7, 331, 34, 38, 43. The present cataloguer estimates that one folio has been lost in each case. Ff. 6, 9, 21, 29, 33, 37, 43, 45, 51, 53 have suffered from clipping. The elaborate zoomorphic capitals are frequently incorrect, one letter being substituted in error for another (see ff. 7 verso, 8 recto, 32 verso). The colouring of the capitals is crude, and inferior pigments have been used which have come through the vellum. The use of green and red pigment by Charles 0’Conor in notes (see ff. 7vb i., 80a i.) suggests that the crude colouring work is O’Conor’s (cf. however the scribal note on fo. 32 verso). O’Conor’s hand occurs frequently in marginal and other notes throughout (see signature, fo. 16 redo, and dates in calculation “1772-1480 = 292,” fo. 80 recto: also “1727,” fo. 81 verso). There are traces of re-inking on ff. 26a, 65 recto. Owing to the. fact that the ms. is bound, no definitive statement can be made here regarding the composition of the gatherings. There appear to be twelve, the normal gathering being the quaternion, viz., 1-8; 9-16; 17-22; 23-32; 331-35; 36-43; 44-49; 50 (single leaf); 51-58; 59-66; 67-74; 75-82; 83-90. It is possible that the single folios wanting after ff. 331, 34 were conjugates; the present fo. 50 is also possibly the conjugate of folio wanting after fo. 43. The folios missing after ff. 7, 38 may have been singles, as the text does not indicate loss of leaves which should otherwise be their conjugates. Bd. in leather; gilt-lettered on spine, “Stowe Ms. D. ii. 2. Royal Irish Academy.” Formerly in Stowe and Ashburnham Collections. Press no. I, 8. The ms. has recently been rebacked.
