D ii 1

Book of Hy Many

Late 14th cent. Vellum. Ca. 16½ × 10½ ; fo. 24 measuring 8½ × 5½, fo. 82, 15 × 6½. Of the original three hundred and sixty-eight leaves (see statement by Maelmuire Ó Huiginn, fo. 25, inf. marg., and corroborating note by Edmond Kelly, dated 1736, fo. 10 verso, inf. marg.Marginalia, below), 157 leaves remain, now foliated consecutively in pencil, 1-157.In, this catalogue references are to this consecutive foliation. An early foliation standing on the ms. (given in brackets, infra) is not contemporary with the ms. itself. It is in ink, and runs 24-29, 39-40, 45-46, 57-58, 65-70, 72-74, 77, 79-111, 113-129, 132-173, one unnumbered folio, 174-[209], 211-214; the last two folios bear no number now decipherable. This means that the ms. contained at least two hundred and seventeen leaves when this foliation was added. At some period previous to foliation it contained three hundred and eight leaves (see fo. 78, inf. marg. See Marginalia, below). Edmond Kelly in 1736 mentions the number one hundred and sixty-eight, presumably that of the leaves existing in the book in his time (see fo. 10 verso. See Marginalia, below).

To judge by the early foliation, the following chasms in the ms. have occurred since it was added, viz., 23 leaves lost at the beginning; after fo. 6, nine leaves wanting; after fo. 8, four leaves wanting; after fo. 10, ten leaves wanting; after fo. 12, six leaves wanting; after fo. 18, one leaf wanting; after fo. 21, two leaves wanting; after fo. 22, one leaf wanting; after fo. 55, one leaf wanting; after fo. 72, two leaves wanting; after fo. 151, one leaf wanting; after fo. 157, at least one folio wanting (the conjugate of that lost after fo. 151). The folios were already in wrong order when this early foliation was added, some single leaves being displaced, e.g., the present folios 131-143 are to be read in the order, 131-134, 136-139, 141, 135, 142, 140, 143 (early foliation, 189-192, 194-197, 199, 193, 200, 198, 201). For the original arrangement of the ms., see infra. Four of the leaves now wanting are preserved as ff. 17-20 of B.M., Egerton 90 (see infra).

Scribes: Adam Cusin, who signs the section ending with fo. 47v., and Faelan Mac a' Gabann na Scél (+ 1423 FM), author of a poem on fo. 47b, who states (fo. 55 verso b i.) that he has written the "caidirne" ending at this point for Muircheartach Ó Ceallaig (+ 1407 FM), Lord-Bishop of Clonfert, his lord, friend and companion, and adjures him not to part with it. This stave is the most carefully written in the entire book, and begins with a beautifully executed initial capital (fo. 48), illuminated in vermilion and chrome, the work of the scribe himself (see infra). The rest of the book, with exception of the additions inserted on blanks left by the scribes, is also apparently in the hands of Cusin and Mac a' Gabann, but shows surprising diversity in the handwriting and in the number of lines to page. Cf., for instance, the various forms of the word "mac" in the genealogies on fo. 1, and the changing "ceann fá eite" of ff. 110-115. The peculiar character of the handwriting is, however, preserved throughout. There is no date given by the scribes, but the fact that Muircheartach Ó Ceallaig is styled Lord-Bishop on fo. 55 verso dates this section from before 1394, when the then Bishop of Clonfert was elected Archbishop of Tuam. On fo. 111 verso, inf. marg., the scribe writes a memorandum of this event on the actual day of the election of Muircheartach (Ó Ceallaig) mac Pilip mic Maine mic Donnchaidh Muimhnigh by the clergy of Connacht to the see of Tuaim Dá Ghualann. This entry is in the opinion of the present cataloguer contemporary with the other entries at this point. The puzzling irregularity of the hand on the recto of this folio and the turning of the leaf before the ink was dry—the cataloguer has met no instance of similar carelessness in vellum mss.—suggests that the scribe's mind was occupied at this point with the election in Tuam. If we accept this exact dating of the latter portion of the ms. (fo. 121, inf. marg., supplies in addition the time of year, shortly before Easter), and the fact that the main body of text is in Faelán Mac a' Gabann's hand (he is himself fully conscious of occasional lapses from his normal standard, see Marginalia below, fo. 143, inf. marg.), how are we to date the genealogical section now standing as ff. 1-38? Here undoubtedly anolder genealogical ms. is being added to from other sources. A clear distinction is, for instance, made between the Uí Neill pedigrees as found in the "genelogiae antiquae" (fo. 1 verso) and "barrgenelaig Clanna Neill a n-aimsir ar scribad an lebar sa." The contemporary Ó Neill is Niall mac Aeda mic Domnaill, as in the Book of Ballvmote, the father of Niall Óg, in whose time the Great Book of Lecan was written. In the Uí Maine genealogies the head of Clann Cheallaigh appears as Uilliam Buidhe (+ 1381) mac Donnchaidh Muimhnigh, granduncle of Muircheartach Ó Ceallaig, whereas Lecan was written in the time of Tadg mac Maelechlainn m. Uilliam m. Donnchaidh Muimhnigh. It is important to note, however, that Muircheartach Ó Ceallaig is here styled "Ardeaspac Connacht" (fo. 8b), and that this designation is an integral part of the text, leaving no doubt that ff. 1-38 of our ms. are misplaced, since they were written after the election of 1394. The naming of Uilliam Buidhe mac Donnchaidh Muimhnigh as head of Clann Cheallaigh, although he had abdicated in 1375, together with the naming of Murchadh (+ 1371) mac Eogain as Ó Madagáin, can only be explained by the fact that the scribe is here copying an older exemplar (cf. the reference to "in seinleabar" on fo. 29a m .). Since a Leabhar Gearr Uí Cheallaig, now lost, was accessible to the scribes of the Book of Ballymote, it is possible that Faelán Mac a' Gabann's unnamed older exemplar was this Leabhar Gearr. The entire ms. can thus be dated with certainty. The present cataloguer is of opinion that the ms. originally began with fo. 48.

The handwriting is in double column, except on ff. 24, 82, which are in single column. In the genealogical sections, however, the columns may be as many as eight in number. The ink varies in quality; where it is very poor the scribe appears to stop writing immediately. Cf. 67v and the comment on fo. 4vbi. The ruling is partly by dry point (see ff. 56 seqq.), partly in brown (see fo. 87). The ruling on ff. 13, 14, 17, 18 differs from that on other folios. Ff. 13-18 give the impression of being fresher vellum than the rest. The vellum is so transparent in places that the ink shows through, e.g., ff. 37, 74, 75, 83, 122, 149. The vellum of ff. 98, 99 is very wrinkled. Fo. 158v was cleaned by Dr. Ditchburn in 1934.

The ms. is in fairly good condition on the whole. Practically the only leaves to escape discoloration and stains are ff. 13-18, 20-21, 24, 66-69. There is a stain resembling white paint on fo. 130v. The text is defaced, wholly or at least in part, on ff. 38v, 44v, 48, 53v, 54, 55, 56, 57, 60, 60v, 75, 76, 79, 79v, 92, 99va, 114v, 115, 117, 123; 137, 138, 139 (defaced at outer margins); 143v, 151, 153, 157v. All the folios were drastically trimmed before the edges were gilded; few have escaped. Cf. fo. 80, where a lengthy scribal addition to text has been cut away. The inferior margins of ff. 11, 12, 104-113, 152-157 give the impression of having been gnawed away. The repair on fo. 113 would, however, indicate that these defects date from an early period. The catchwords occurring occasionally and only on last folio of staves do not appear to the present cataloguer to be scribal; they have escaped the binder's knife. Ff. 10v, 23v, 33v, 66v show distinct imprints of the natural defects in the vellum leaves which must have once followed immediately on these particular folios. In one of these cases, fo. 10v, a section can be proved to have fallen out (see supra). A tiny piece of vellum has been excised from fo. 109. The ink of fo. 111 was still wet when the leaf was turned. There are crude repairs carried out with vellum on ff. 21, 22, 92, 99 (now damaged), 120; neater mends on ff. 1, 2, 80. Fo. 151 has been repaired with white thread. The following folios, or columns, are blank, or were originally blank, the space being now filled by later entries : 6vb m., 8v (orig.), 10vab (orig.), 20vb i., 22vb i, 23vb (orig.), 24 (orig.), 34vb i., 38vb i., 56bi (orig.), 63bi. (orig.), 69vab (orig.); 74a m.-75v (orig.), 99vb i. (owing to transparency of vellum); 126a m., 143vb i.

Colour (generally chrome and vermilion) is applied on ff. 1, 6v; 7-8, 39 (late rubrication only); 45v, 48-55v, 56, 62 (late), 64v, 65, 70, 73v, 74, 76, 83, 84, 119, 131, 139v, 141. There is no colour from fo. 144 to end of ms. Crude aluminium paint is applied by a late hand on ff. 9-11, 103, 115, 116. In addition, a green pigment appears with red and aluminium on fo. 111, obviously added by a later hand. The illuminated capitals are generally of zoomorphic interlaced design and are finely executed, being the work of the scribe himself, to judge by the way the handwriting is modified to fit the space left by the capitals, e.g., on ff. 48-55v. Cf. fo. 103b i., where scribe first makes a draft of ornamental initial and then proceeds with his transcription work. Sometimes the capital is, however, superimposed on the written word, as on fo. 35v. On fo. 49b occurs an unusually fine tailpiece; amusing tailpieces stand on ff. 12, 117v. A fine drawing of a fish stands on fo. 45v.

The ms. is at present unbound, having been loosed from its binding for the purpose of being photographed by the Ordnance Survey for the Irish Manuscripts Commission. The composition of the gatherings is as follows:—1 (24)-4 (27); 5 (28) single leaf; 6 (29) single leaf; 7 (39)-10 (46); 11 (57)-12 (58); 13 (65)-18 (70); 19 (72) single leaf; 20 (73) single leaf; 21 (74)-22 (77); 23 (79)-24 (80); 25 (81)-32 (88); 33 (89) single leaf; 34 (90) single leaf; 35 (91)-38 (94); 39 (95)-46 (102); 47 (103) single leaf; 48 (104)-55 (111); 56 (113) single leaf; 57 (114)-64 (121); 65 (122) single leaf; 66 (123) single leaf; 67 (124) single leaf; 68 (125)-69 (126); 70 (127)-75 (134); 76 (135) single leaf; 77 (136)-81 (140), fo. 79 (138) being a single leaf; 82 (141) single leaf; 83 (142) single leaf; 84 (143)-91 (150); 92 (151)-99 (158); 100 (159)-107 (166); 108 (167)-114 (173), fo. 109 (168) being a single leaf; 115 (unnumbered)-122 (180); 123 (181)-130 (188); 131 (189)-139 (197), fo. 135 (193) being a single leaf; 140 (198)-143 (201), ff. 141 (199), 142 (200) being single leaves; 144 (202)-151 (209); 152 (211)-157 (216). The ms. is gilt-edged; the binding plush on wood, the work of J. Clarke. The ms. has been rebacked, and now bears, gilt-lettered on spine, the name "Leabhar Hy-Maine. Stowe D. II. 1." Ashburnham no. 880, sale catalogue no. 34 (see Academy List of Ashburnham mss.). Before 1820 it had come by chance into the possession of Sir William Betham, who sold it to the Duke of Buckingham for £150 at some date after 1820 (see O'Curry, Mann. and Customs ii, p. 124, and B.M. Cat. ii, p. 601). The British Museum leaves, Eg. 90, ff. 17-20, were bought from James Hardiman ca. 1850 (O'Currv, loc. cit.). O 'Reilly seems to be the originator of the present name, "Book of Hy Many."

The signatures of scribes, owners, etc, will be found included in the following list of Marginalia. All colophons are given here as well as at their place of incidence in the table of contents, infra. The Marginalia reveal much that is of interest for the history of the ms. Since the ms., or at least part of it, was written for Muircheartach Ó Ceallaigh, (+ 1438), Archbishop of Tuam, and still belonged in the latter half of the 18th century to named members of the Ó Ceallaigh family of Tonalig, [Co. Roscommon], it is permissible to conclude that the book did not leave the possession of the Ó Ceallaigh family until some time before 1820, when (according to Edward O'Reilly, Irish Writers, p. cxx), the "Book of the O'Kellys" was in the Library of Sir William Betham. The frequent occurrence on the ms. of signatures, etc, of members of the family of Mac Uilliam Burke of Clanrickard does not weaken this assumption, as the families of Burke and Ó Ceallaigh were on friendly terms with one another. Signatures of two members of the Ó Huiginn family occur, one of whom, the Maelmuire Ó Huiginn already mentioned in connection with the estimate of the number of folios standing in the original ms., may have been the brother of Tadhg Dall Ó Huiginn. This Maelmuire was Archbishop of Tuam (see I.T.S., xxiii 316). Our personage may, however, just as likely have been the Maelmuire, oide Ereann le dán (+ 1488 FM) or indeed any other of the nine listed Knott, loc. cit. The possession of the book by a 16th century Archbishop of Tuam, if it could be proved, might point to the possibility of the book having remained in the possession of successive Archbishops of Tuam. No doubt most of the signatures where the surname is not given belong to members of the Ó Ceallaigh family. The number of jottings in various hands entered in the ms,, e.g., ff. 6vb, 8d i., 8v, 10v, 19, 20, 22vb, 23vb, 24, 24v, .26, 38vb, 63b i., 69v, 72v, 74a m.-75, 126a, has called forth a protest by someone unknown: " A Muire, a leabair moir, is an-aibinn duit fa lamaib gach duine" (fo. 74v). Dubhaltach Mae Firbhisigh was among those who made use of the ms. and wrote his name in it. For partial list of contents in Ware's hand, see B.M. Cat. ii, p. 601. From Brian Ó Fearghail, the scribe of 55, supra, we learn of other mss. in the possession of Éamonn Ó Ceallaigh (+1754) of Tonalig. Our ms. was left by Éamonn Ó Ceallaigh to his son, Lochlainn Ó Ceallaigh of Tonalig (fo. 69vb m.).

Ms. sources named in the texts include: Leabar Clochair Mac Naemhin (al. Daemhin), fo. 7vbi; Leabar Sabaill Padraig, fo. 13; Saltair Caisil, ff. 26, 33v; Leabar Droma Saileach, fo. 34a; Leabhar Lothra, fo. 34v.

A faded inscription here, signed by Edmond Kelly, 5th July, 1736, is partly legible under ultra violet lamp, viz., "I find some reasonable circumstances and proofs that this booke was writt about the year of the Lord God 1400 ........................ genealogies of Kellys ... Murtagh Kelly ........................, son of Donnchadh Muimhneach, was Archbishop of Tuam about same time this booke was writt. Murtagh Kelly died anno Domini 1438." A further note on right-hand side, inf. marg., concerns the number of leaves in the book at different times. The estimates 168 and 368 (?) are given, the latter considered to be the original number. This note proves that 168 leaves stood in the book in 1736.

6 (29)vb. Originally left blank, save for eleven lines of preceding item. Entries have been added later in three non-scribal hands, viz., ( a) Obit of Matthew Magrath, Bishop of Clonfert, who died in 1507. (b) List of herbs, etc, said to destroy worms, followed by a cure for affections of the mouth, This entry (which was begun on fo. 8vb but abandoned) is later than the list of kings on fo. 8va, as a faded scribble by the same hand, fo. 8vb, presupposes the existence of the list. (c) Uinne uinne sgert an cruinne, 1 q.; followed (same hand) by a note : "Domnall mac Neill I Muirgesa qui sgribsit (?). Mac Uilliam Clainni Ricaird do eg in bliadain sin."

Nine leaves have been lost between fo. 6 (29) and 7 (39).

7 (39).. A detailed genealogical account of the Ui Maine. Acephalous. Begins here : [Dom] nall 7 as e in Domnall sin is ceap do Cloind Ceallaig uili aniú. This is Domnall Mór Ó Ceallaigh, who died in 1224.

8 (40). Genealogical treatise on the Uí Maine continued. Pedigrees of the following families are given:—Clann Cheallaigh, viz., Clann Donnchaid Muimhnigh, beg. with Uilliam [+ AU 1381, abdicated 1375] mac Donncaidh Muimhnigh (and including his grandnephew "Muircheartach, Ardeaspac Connacht"), (fo. 8, col. b) Ó Madagáin, prince of Síl nAnamcadha, (fo. 8, col. c) Clann Aeagain. Additional material has been added in the margin and (in later hand) at the end of this section.

8 v. The verso of this folio was left blank originally, owing to the transparency of the vellum, through which the ink of fo. 8 recto is visible. Space was used at a later date for genealogical entries by three different scribes and an annotator, viz.:—

8 va. A list (in a later hand) of the kings of Uí Maine descended from Ceallach mac Finnachta, who occupies the fírst place on the list. The list ends significantly with Donchadh (+ 1424 F.M.) mac Maileachlainn. Since his son Tadhg (who, according to O'Donovan, Tribes and Customs of Hy Many, p. 118, succeeded for three years only) is not mentioned, this addition, though dated 1424, must have been made in the ms. before Tadhg 's accession. The colophon runs: "In decimo die mensis Octobris

++++ a small “i” appears in this line above the u – (u sine) ++++++++++

anno Domini M°CCCC°XX°IIII°. u sine (sic) sgribsit. Finit." A later hand has added dates along the right margin of this cohimn.

8 vb m. (top of column occupied by some faded entries). Pedigree (in a still later hand) of Aodh mac Taidg mic Uilliam mic Taidg Duibh mic Maoileachluinn mic Taidg mic Donncaidh mic Maoileachluinn. Acc. to O 'Donovan (op. cit., p. 121), Tadhg Dubh (+ 1513 F .M.) of this line was the last to be styled king of Uí Maine. His son Uilliam succeeded as Ó Ceallaigh of Mullach Mór but never became king of Uí Maine. Aodh [Caoch] mac Taidg mic Uilliam of Mullach Mór received a pardon in 1611 (Rot. Pat. 9 Jac. I., p. 3, d. 53). The scribe carries the pedigree back only to Ceallach [mac Finnachta] ; a second hand carries it from this point to Adam. The hand which. added dates in col. a annotates the triple column here in a similar manner. The first hand appears to be that of the writer of the note in the centre of this page (before the entry) : " A Concobhair mic Emhainn I Ceallaigh, cuimnigh oramsa uair ecin aile .i. air Aodhagan mac Conchubhair."

Four leaves are wanting between fo. 8 (40) and fo. 9 (45). Two of these are possibly B.M., Eg. 90, ff. 18, 19.

9 (45). Acephalous poem, initial seven-syllable line of which (according to conclusion) began with the words Tabair ad gl (with cross-stroke through "l," the usual contraction for "genelach" ). The spears of the king of Ceara from the Cruaith, of Aralt, and the spears from Corcaigh are mentioned in the fragment (3½ qq.) which remains. The poem is in praise of one "Conaing mac Moiri is Murchaid."

9 (45) m. Genealogical and historical tract on the Ui Maine, beg. The section on "Sochair na Saerclann," beginning without superscription on fo. 9b, 1. 11, is that printed by O'Donovan, Tribes and Customs of Hy Many, p. 62 ff., from 535, 83, but appears to be a different version. The Lecan text ends at a point corresponding to our fo. 10a, 1. 7, from the bottom of page. In our ms. a further section, beg. E t is e seo ordugad in uasailcísa sin, is primarily a commentary on the verse Dligidh righ o Maine in mal, 1 q., and ends on fo. 10b, 1. 23, with the verse, Cadach na cath ga cabair, 1 q.

(Last three words occur over paragraph.) Cf. fo. 110 (169)b i., where the scribe of the main text signs simply, "Finid qui scribsit."

The sections standing as ff. 13 (65)-14 (66), 17 (69)-18 (70), though no doubt in the same hand as the surrounding folios, differ greatly from them in ruling and condition of vellum.

One leaf is lost between ff. 18 (70) and 19 (72). The gap can be supplied from the Book of Lecan.
