24 L 6

Devotional Verse.

17-18th centt. Paper. 8 × 5¾ (pt. 1); 7 3/10 × 5⅗ (pt. 2). pp. 68. Scribes : (1) pp. 1-60, Eóghan Ó Caoimh(v. pp.2, 37, 58); (2) pp. 61-67, unsigned, but a comparison with other MSS. (e.g. 24 L 5) shows them to be in the handwriting of Seán Ó Conaill. The note on p. 68 of the MS. errs in making the scribe to be William Hyland, senior. The following remarks apply to part 1 of the MS. (viz. pp. 1-60). The edges of many of the leaves have been repaired with gummed paper. P. 36 is much rubbed. These pp. originally formed part of a very large volume devoted entirely to religious texts (cf. scribal note, p. 2). The present consecutive pagination is a pencil one, and quite recent ; but traces remain of an original foliation and of a later pagination (both apparently scribal). Thus p. 5 was originally f. 227, otherwise p. 177 ; p. 19, f. 235 and p. 193 ; p. 37, f. 323 and p. 369 ; p. 55, p. 387 ; p. 59, f. 246 and p. 215. There are gaps after pp. 4, 10, and 37 ; the pp. now numbered 59-60 belong to the leaves missing between pp. 37 and 38. Bound (both parts in one vol.) in half-leather. O’Daly Collection, no. 20. On the flyleaf is a note, signed John O’Daly, 1852, concerning the MS., which, he says, was written by Owen O’Keeffe in 1679.
