23 O 4

Medical, Religious, Miscellaneous

16th cent.? Vellum, average size 7¾ × 5½, but many leaves are smaller and of irregular shape. Pp. 58. The pagination goes wrong at p. 37, but the error is compensated at p. 43. Half-bound in green boards, leather back, gilt-lettered, "Ms. Hib. Memb." Inside front cover is pasted a slip from a sale-catalogue : "7. A small octavo book, 58 pages, written vellum. The subjects are miscellaneous, Historical, Religious, and Medical. The time of writing is various, from 1400 to 1507." The date 1400 seems arbitrary; 1507 is probably an error for 1567. The volume consists of fragments written by various hands, mainly perhaps in the 16th century. One fragment is dated 1567 (p. 26). The Life of S. Eustathius was written at Slemuin Mór (Slane) in Meath (p. 19). Names of scribes unknown. Written in double columns as far as p. 38. Rubricated capitals; pages much worn and blackened, in places quite illegible through damp and exposure. Recently interleaved. Inside flyleaf is number 938. Former Academy numbering 11/4.

p.

1 . Blackened and illegible. Here begins according to O'Curry (Acad. Cat., p. 30) "a genealogical poem of about 300 verses on the families of the Breifnies, viz., the O'Rourkes, O'Reillys, McGaurans, etc, addressed to or written for Cathal O'Reilly, lord of Cavan, who died in the year 1161." Ends, p. 5, Cathal cosgrach anois 'na righ ar Chabhain(?) comdes: mor a spés ar ndenam rann, faicfid da és a oc-clann (the last word is doubtful). After this stanza: "Adám. O Cianain ro sgríb in duain." But the poem seems to be a joint production; the penultimate stanza says Gilla Beraig . . . in sai lan agmar leighis . . . lemsa ig denaibh na duaini.
