Ó Cléirig: Leabhar Gabhala

617.

17th cent. Paper. 7 3/8 X 5¼. Pp. 266, excluding pp. inserted by the binder. Foliated consecutively by scribe from third leaf of ms. on, 4 leaves being omitted by error from the foliation between ff. 92, 94. (Note that the foliation of the scribal index on p. 2a corresponds with this original foliation, a fact ignored by the editors of the text, see ed. MacNeill-Macalister, p. 7, note). A recent pagination runs (omitting first leaf of ms.) la, 2a, 1b, 2-260. The numbers 242, 243 are duplicated, but the error has been corrected in pencil. This pagination is followed in the table of contents, infra. Scribe is believed to be Cuchoigcriche Ó Cléirigh (cf. Studies, xxiv, 260). The ms. shows neither subscriptio nor date. The watermark consists mainly of a vase with an S-shaped handle (see p. 187). At p. 169 the watermarked letter 'A' is visible in the paper. The ms. is discoloured, but is in an excellent state of preservation on the whole. The hand-writing is beautifully legible and regular; the pages are ruled in dry point. The first leaf of the ms. is stained and damaged, but has been repaired. It is blank save for some scribbling; see p. [1], infra. There are two tiny holes caused by worm in p. la, one in pp. 1b, 3, 11, but the text has not sufíered. There are ink blots (of recent origin) on pp. 1-13, inf. marg., 10, 125 i., 204. The lower outer corners of pp. 41, 101, 103, 153, 229, 237, 247, 255, and the upper outer corners of pp. 169, 259 have been neatly mended. The verso of the first leaf and pp. 245 i, 246-259 are blank. On p. 260 is pasted part of the original last leaf of the ms. Bd. in calf, half-extra, tooled. Gilt-lettering on back, "Leabhar Gabhala or The Book of Invasions.' , "O'Reilly MSS. No. 113"—i.e., no. 113 of the O'Reilly Sale Catalogue (Dublin, 1830). A slip cover of black American leather is gilt-lettered on back, "Leabhar Gabhala O'Clerigh MS. Royal Irish Academy." The book is loosening from the original binding. For an account of how 23 D 17, 23 K 32, 23 N 28, 23 P 24 came into O'Reilly's possession, see O'Curry's MS. Materials, pp. 178, 179, and Description of 23 P 24. The notes throughout the text —e.g., pp. 34, inf. marg., 39, ét passim—are in O'Reilly's hand (O'Curry, Acad. Cat., p. 89). O'Donovan's hand appears in a note on a front flyleaf, see infra. A detached slip in O'Curry's hand reads: "Irish Manuscript. Leabhar Gabhála or History of the Invasions of Ireland written by O Clerigh, A.D. 1630." Former Academy number, 33/4.

O'Curry, MS. Materials, p. 178, deduces from the absence of the Dedication that this copy of the Leabhar Gabhála was intended for the scribe's own use.

On a front flyleaf John O 'Donovan has written the following note:—"This copy wants the dedication to Brian Roe Maguire, first Baron of Enniskillen, under whose patronage the work was compiled, and also Michael O'Clery's address to the reader. Both the aforementioned are in the College [ i.e., T.C.D.] copy, which however wants several of the glosses which appear in this copy. J. O'Donovan, April 26th, 1836."
