Adv. MS 72.2.4

(Gaelic MS.LIV). IRISH VERSE

Mackinnon, pp.100, 162 f; Mackechnie 215-7.

18th cent. Paper. 16 × 10 cms. Pp. 88. Still forming a flyleaf is the remaining portion of a Kilkenny newspaper of 1757 used in the original binding. Scribe (except p. 44): Séamus Ó Maolruanaigh. Marginalia in his hand, both Roman and Gaelic, are to be found on the flyleaf; on p.1 (l. 5 “James”; the lower three-eighths of the folio has been torn out, leaving “[ ] his hand and seal” in marg.); p. 3; p. 4 (“Semus o ionnraic liom mar an geadna mar amhrn”); p.11; p.15 (“Semus ua Maolruadhneadh a labhar 7 a laimh / a n-aois an tidh”); p. 17 (“James M” twice, with an intervening 6-line scrawl including the name Ribbard Purtail); p. 25, and p. 88. There are other notes on the flyleaf (“John [ ]”), on p.5 (“I promis to pay unto Thomas Bryan”), p. 15 (“William [ ]anagan (under the UV light it becomes "Branagan") Lishane [ ]”), and p. 88. By the 19th cent. several leaves were removed from the end. The MS. was obtained by Patrick Turner during 1798-1802 “from a woollen spinner whose name he cannot now recollect in Carrickonsuir in the county of Tiperara” [Ingliston MS. A.i.15 (g)). Scribbles of Turner’s appear on pp. 28, 29 (“Paddy from Cork”), and 38. The MS. became no.1 of the four presented by him in 1809 to the Highland Society of Scotland, through John Campbell, J.P., the Society’s Translator; the final page, p. 88, is inscribed “No.I.”, signed by Turner and initialled by Campbell. In 1811-12 the MS. was examined and paginated by Ewen MacLachlan, whose description of it is in Adv.MS.72.3.4, pp. 68-71; his handwriting appears on the flyleaf and on p. 88. Deposited with Advocates' collection in 1850. Paper: pp. 1-46 thin, “crown”(?) watermark.; pp. 47-88 thick, unwatermarked. Thumbed and stained. Original leather binding.
