MS 4

Poems, Genealogies, etc.

18th cent. Paper. c. 28.5 × 17.5 cms. Pp. 25+39 + 16, with 2 leaves inserted at beginning, 3 at end and 1 between pp. 48 and 49. First 25 pp. originally numbered on rectos 1-5, 9-11, 15-29; this reckoning later altered to 1-25. Pagination continued in pencil to 32; remaining pages also numbered in pencil, but bound 37-44, 33-6, 45-[64]. Pp. 29-40 bear earlier pagination 368-79 (pp. 41-6 presumably 380-85, but numbers cut away in trimming). Pp. 53-63 formerly [271]-[281] (numbers trimmed away on some leaves). Leaf torn out after p. 6 and another apparently after p. 10. Main scribe: Seadhan Ua Briain, a priest, in 1740/41 (pp. 38 m, 47 i; cf. p. 53, lower margin, pencilnote ['Written by John Bryan Co Kilky 1736']; see also p. 55 i). Pp. 1-26, 48, 52, in the hand of Pattruicc Ua Loingseadh 'a CCairg na Suire 1791' (p. 1). Poems on pp. 7-29 in double columns. Coloured initials on pp. 27-8; ornamental capitals (some coloured) on pp. 30 ff.

The manuscript now contains only a few fragments of a much larger volume. The first part of this is evidently NLI ms G 994 (Foras Feasa ar Éirinn), written by the present scribe at Doire na Saoire [Derrynaseera, Co. Laois] in 1736/7 (cf. pp. 1-3, 53 marg., of the present manuscript). This is paginated i-[xxvi], 1-270 (cf. earlier pagination of pp. 53-63 of this manuscript) and measures approximately 28 × 18 cms, having been trimmed in binding like the present manuscript. It is to be noted that title-pages for both were supplied by Ó Loingsigh.

Note in pencil on verso of 2nd leaf at beginning: 'This book contains the genealogy of the Saints of Ireland in verse, with some other poems on moral and Historical subjects. The book of Rights of the Kings of Munster will be found towards the end of the book, and a celebrated historical poem of great antiquity. The book is written by a correct scribe as it appears to me wherever I have closely examined it. E O Reilly'. Notes on verso of last leaf: (a) 'Mac Feorais Berminghams.' (b) 'Flin Shandon street Cork Doctor Keating Parish Priest of Cahir James Keating Parish Priest (of) Clogheen D Barry Parish Priest of [Clogheen cancelled] of Fermoy Dor Nugent Michaelstown Doctor Murnane Tipperary.' (c) 'Charles O Hara MP Nymphsfield Co Sligo Coolooney & Ballysadare / Clery Ballymacroy Newportprat / Thadey O Rourke of Carrick an Chun or Carhauchsawn Drumahair on the river Uaihne/ Brannon a Priest near Ballycastle Co Antrim.' (d) 'Aylemar / Ballinchollig Co Cork John of Lismore / Roger Col Keating coin of H of Bourbon.' Items (b) and (d) in pencil. Some further writing lower down in page.
