MS 16

Medical.

16th cent. Vellum. 34.5×24 cms. Ff. 20 (foliated in pencil in recent hand) in three gatherings, 1-8, 9-16, 17-20, with lacunae before and after 17 and at end (scraps of folios still remain before 17 and after 20). Scribe unidentified.

Double columns, ruled mainly in brown, with some dry-point ruling; 58 to 75 lines to page; marginal prickings in several places; spaces left for ornamental initials throughout, with appropriate letters indicated in margins. Bound in boards; watermark 'R Barnard 1810' in end-papers; spine now worn at top and bottom. Small tear in inner half of f. 7; tear in f. 11 repaired with thread. Vellum naturally defective in several places; ff. 17-20 dotted with small holes. Outer half of last leaf badly stained and partly illegible, showing that final leaves have been lost for a long time; staining also on ff. 6-7 and on outer edges of other folios. Slight loss of text due to trimming of outer margins of ff. 1-2. Ff. 8 v, 9 r, 16 v, marked 'A', 'B', 'B', respectively, in lower margins. Labelled '558' on spine and '16' on front cover, with '1', '595 [. . .]', '217' (in pencil), marked on f. 1 r, upper margin; cf. mss 17 and 18. Words 'Irish Medical MS' on recto of first fly-leaf.

The fact that the manuscript contains part of book II of Rosa Anglica has not been noted by W. Wulff in her brief reference to it in ITS XXV (1929) lii.

The name 'Charly Andrew' occurs on f. 15 r, left margin (trans.); some writing also on ff. 7 v and llr, upper margins.
